What could cause these spots on my birkin? I’ve had this plant for years and haven’t made any care changes recently except for adding a moss pole to the pot to help support the plant. Thanks in advance!

    They are normal. Your plant is healthy and nothing is wrong. I’m assuming you have double checked for pests. These happen because of the hybridization of the Birkin. This plant often reverts back to solid leaves too. Sometimes they just get a little weird with their growth. Nothing you can do about the spots. It’s a plant with lots of personality.

    It may be a result of some change related EFN since you switched environments. EFN is common in philodendrons and is short for Extrafloral Nectaries. Basically, the plant was adapted in its original outside environment to produce drops of a sugary-type liquid to attract critters like ants and ladybugs to help it fight any outside invaders. It is totally common and absolutely natural. You also shouldn't attract any ants or anything like that if it's indoors 😬

    They are a common occurrence. “Small brown or reddish spots on a Philodendron Birkin are usually caused by Extrafloral Nectaries (EFNs), which are harmless, sugary secretions that dry into spots. Other common causes include fungal or bacterial infections from overwatering, or pest damage (thrips or spider mites).”
