I feel like quite suddenly my ring of fire looks awful. Cut off a couple of the lower leaves tonight that didn’t look like they were great so it could spend more energy elsewhere. I moved it to the window. Not sure why this particular one is being so finicky. I’ve had really good luck with all my other philodendrons. At one point on that reddish growth in the middle, I looked over and the top half of it was black, so I cut that off and unwrapped it and the red underneath looks healthy. Then today I was looking at it, and the leaves look on their way to bad. The photo on my nightstand is when I first got it on December 4th. So it’s not very old. The other three leaf photos are from tonight. Am I just being paranoid and it’s fine?

    She looks like she might be over watered. Have you checked her roots?

      Think I’ve only watered it twice in that month and a half and it does have drainage. But one area that I lack confidence is checking roots. I always hear how it’s bad to be constantly transplanting etc so wouldn’t pulling it out of the pot and messing with all the dirt traumatize it?

    Also, I should include that I am in Washington and it’s very very very cold in my room right now because my heater doesn’t work. The rest of the house is about 55° and it feels a little cooler in here.

    My ADHD brain keeps thinking of things to add after I hit post. Our significantly reduced my watering schedule for these plants in here because it’s not warm enough for it to really evaporate.

    You might want to check the indoor temperature range for the plant. I think 55 could be out of range for a tropical plant. Plus if it's by the windows, it could be getting a draft. Try turning up the heat, and adding a tablespoon of paprika to the soil when you next water it.

    If it helps, I’m having an abundance of issues also. This happens every winter. It does look over watered. Move it to another room. Get yourself a decent grow light. Use Dr Planta for a diagnosis. I’ve used it for five plants over the weekend. But the diagnosis just confirmed what I thought was going on with each plant.

      I have a lot of grow lights so I pretty good about finding the best ones. This is a recent acquisition and is on sale for a very good price. My favorite is Sansi brand but this is also pretty good but not as expensive. It’s much brighter than the cheaper brands and has a remote. I’m using it on succulents and they seem satisfied.

      A few pics of the light in action. It’s darker this time of year so my grow lights are on longer. I bet Washington is even darker than where I am—mid Atlantic.

      Thanks! I moved it from my nightstand to the window so it’ll be getting more light. I have grow lights in my bathrooms, but not in rooms where it’s in front of a window. It’s dark here from about 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. around a month after the solstice. So it’s getting a little lighter longer each day, but…. Definitely still winter..

    Theres a great video on youtube by Aloha Plant Life called “Master the Language of Houseplant Leaves: What They’re Trying to Tell You.” It’s long but very well worth it! Some questions I’d ask to better diagnose: Is the soil dry or wet when you stick your finger in it, and when did you last water? What kind of window is it living by and when did you move it there? Or what kind of light has it been receiving? Do you see any signs of pests? I could probably narrow it down some of the issues with that information, but the video is also great!

      I’ll look into that video thank you. I’ve only watered it twice since I bought it on December 4th. I just moved it to the window last night. Prior to that it was to the right of the window on my nightstand. No pests.

    Did you happen to get it at Home Depot or Lowe’s? Mine looks almost exactly like yours. The first couple of leaves that came out were really bad and I think it had some sort of pest that I seem to have gotten rid of. It’s put out to new leaves since then, but I still have all the brown spots and other markings like yours does.

      I didn’t get this particular plant there, no. My local nursery imports plants from a greenhouse somewhere. I made the mistake of following them on Facebook and now I have more plants 😩🤣

    @Dani I really think that if the plant didn’t look like that when you bought it, it is likely dying from the temperature. Most philodendrons won’t survive long term under 65F degrees

      So I got a heater from my room but I don’t know if it’s too late? I’m struggling this winter with watering and humidity and the cold. I barely touched my micans and like 3 healthy leaves dropped right off

    I’m so sorry!! I was also thinking that the soil it was potted in is probably not the best depending on where you got it. Check those roots as soon as you can get the room warm enough and if necessary get her into some chunky aroid mix. It would shock you what a philodendron will bounce back from but you may end up having to “start over” with her. I’m rooting for you!! 🥰🥰

      I hope the rooting for me is a Pun intended? Lol Well sadly it deteriorated, and after realizing that it was too little too late, I pulled apart my plant because I just don’t understand what went wrong and it was totally gonna die. I’m going to see if it can be propagated and saved at all. Photos after much scraping and investigating a brown stem area. Previously, this was the one that looked like a healthy new leaf was going to emerge and then all of a sudden overnight it turned black. It could totally have been me, but I’m not convinced that this was a completely 100% healthy plant when I got it. It “died” sooo fast. Anyway, It looks to me like there might be one healthy node? When I tried to investigate the roots like you all suggested, the whole thing just pulled right out so there aren’t really any roots except for a couple little danglys. Ugh pray for me 🤣🤣🤣

      Yes, totally pun intended 😂 It looks like you can save it from the photo. Clean off all the dead roots and clean with peroxide. Let it dry out and I would recommend rooting hormone and planting it in perlite sphagnum mix, leca or stratum. I think what happened was the plant was already in crappy soil and was already dying when you got him. Truly rooting for you now!! 😂🥰🥰
