New Plant Mom

**Help** Just bought a neon and Brazil philodendron from my local nursery a week ago. They potted them for me that day and I did my first watering a few days ago. I am completely new to taking care of plants. Do they look okay? I’m terrified of root rot because a lot of my plants died that way. They are about 5ft away from a north facing window and this app says it’s not bright enough. I don’t want to kill them and want to make sure I’m caring for them properly. I got grow lights to help with the light but not sure if I need it or how long to keep it on or how far away the light should be from the plant so I don’t burn the leaves. I know it’s a lot of questions. Any advice will help and be much appreciated.

Don’t panic they are very easy to care for. IMO I would wait on the grow light. Mine has been fine in a window it’s huge. They are low light tolerant and only need watered sparingly

Thank you for your suggestions! I’ll put a pause on the grow lights. The app was saying they didn’t get enough light so thank you for confirming they are tolerable in low light. That takes off some stress. I’ll let them chill where they are and hope to see them grow and be happy!

Both plants will tolerate low light and live. But, they thrive in bright indirect light. The Brasil plant could lose or get reduced areas of variegation in low light conditions. The neon philodendron could get less vibrant leaves in low light conditions. My neon is shown. It gets east light. Plants 5 ft from a north window is not getting much light. Use a light meter app to see the amount of light reaching the plant. Planta has one built in accessible to members. I recommend getting a grow light if you want the plants to thrive. Most single plant grow lights need to run at least 12 hours a day and need to be placed within 1 foot from a plant.

Thank you for that amazing advice. Looks like I’ll have to move some plants around to find the best light in the house. I do have some grow lights so if I can’t find a good light source I’ll place the grow lights foot from the plant for your suggested 12 hour periods. I also used plants for the light meter but I didn’t know how true it was since I’m not at all familiar with what light areas are. This is really helpful and thank you so much for steps I need to take for a healthy plant.
