hi! i’m new to this whole plant parent thing and have been trying to take care of this beautiful philodendron brasil! some of its new stems are dying off for some reason (e.g., top right) and i’m not sure why. can anyone help?

    Hi there, have you got this in a glass jar without drainage holes by any chance? If so, as a beginner plant parent, I would suggest potting this up in an ordinary plastic pot with drainage holes because it’s much easier to control watering. More often than not, overwatering and underwatering are the biggest reasons for issues. It’s much easier to make sure you don’t overwater in a pot with drainage holes because at the very least, excess water is able to drain out of the pot before you put it back to its usual location. Hope that helps!

      thank you for the insight!! it is in a glass pot but it has a drainage hole at the bottom. is this okay?

      Yes, it will be much easier to care for with a drainage hole :) Good practice for watering is checking the soil (with a glass container you might actually be able to see without putting your finger or a chopstick into the soil). If the soil is looking dry or mostly dry, take the plant over to the sink and water thoroughly. A large amount in one go is totally fine! Based on the size of this plant that could be 2-3 cups of water. Just let it drain out of the drainage hole before placing it back to its usual location. If you’re using Planta’s watering reminders, it’s good to keep in mind that there’s no way the app can possibly know all the variables that make up this plant’s unique environment. So do use the watering reminders as just that - a reminder to check the soil. If it’s still moist, snooze the watering task. This way you’re still in control and responding to the plant’s needs rather than to a guesstimate on watering frequency. What I’m sure you will find is that the plant’s watering needs change over time, especially if you live somewhere that has seasons. Best of luck!
