I recently adopted this philodendron (Phil) from my partners mum who had propergated it from her big mama! But 1. I’m unsure on the type of philodendron.. I’m thinking tiger tooth but so many look alike! And 2. Why is the cataphyll (I’m assuming that’s what it is😂) dangling in midair on the vine? (I was warned she grew abit chaotic). A lot of the photos I see they are in the soil but mines just up here chilling.. has anyone else seen a philo like this? And does she look okay.. I’m new to this plant completely!

    They grow long and lanky when searching for light/water/nutrients. Consider chopping and propagating it. Put the newly rooted cuttings back into the pot to make the plant fuller. Add c a grow light or move it closer to brighter indirect sunlight or sunlight filtered through sheer curtains. 🪴🍀

      This already is a new propergated baby that was potted about 2 months ago with only 2 leaves ♥️ she came off a huge 4ft one on a moss pole , she’s sat about 2 metres away from a west facing window, So gets lots of morning and early afternoon sun. And was potted in a mix of nutritional house plant soil, orchid bark and perlite. If all that seems right? I’m just unsure if she is a tiger tooth and why the bulky pink cataphyll is chilling so high up and if that’s just a normal anatomy for this type of Philo 😫😂 she’s a crazy girl with a crazy hair do hahaha

      So maybe move her even closer to the window again?? I’m worried to propergate again as she’s only just been potted so soon ago. But maybe when she grows abit bigger? X

      Two meters from a window is considered shade. It needs more light. Plus, they climb in their native environment to seek light/water in tree trunks or rocks. So, they will they still need light When they climb a pole. 🪴🍀

      She was sat next to my monstera at an east facing window, my monstera has sat happily there for the last year, but I have now moved her to this west facing window instead on my desk. (I’m going to pick up some sheer nets to put in that window soon) but would you say that’s a better place for her? 🌞🌿

      The new location should be an improvement since the monstera is doing well there without burning. You may not need the net especially as days get shorter and light intensity decreases in the fall. The sheer net might block valuable light this time of year.

    Appears very leggy perhaps but not sure why and I'm very new to Philo myself... All of mine are growing very compact though so this appears to be quite different

    Ahh another thing that just occurred too me .. could this be a climbing philo? Do you see nodes? In that case it might be searching for something to climb on. I just ordered some hollow hexagonal poles for my climbing philo and I filled them with new Zealand sphagnum

      Yes she is indeed a climbing philo that’s all I know. The person who gave it to me chopped it from her huge one that’s in a moss pole, just a bit shorter than myself!! 😂😫 I’ve got some poles on it but I may get something bigger! I’ll look into it thank you ☺️. Good luck with your philo journey! 🌿
