Hello all, I have a Philodendron in its original 14inch nursery pot about 8 ft away from a west facing window that gets a lot of afternoon sunlight. I’ve been following the care plan offered by Planta, but it’s starting to look sick. I’m wondering if I’m not giving it enough water… I watered about 4 days ago and the top 2 inches already feels dry. I believe I give it about 16 ounces of water when prompted. Should I increase that? Am I doing something else wrong perhaps?

From your picture it looks like it is maybe being overwatered, do you water from the top or bottom?

Thanks for the response. I water from the top.

It might have some root rot

Oh boy… I’m going to have to figure out how I can get it out of its pot indoors to check. It’s a bit too chilly to take it outside.

I know that feeling, time to lay out some news paper, I actually ordered a small folding mat from Temu for repotting it is handy for inside

Hi there.. I think it may be an “imperial red”, I hope that helps.

What’s your water like? I’ve seen lots of “rusting” and discoloring of leaves if your water isn’t great. If you have city water that could be the issue. Otherwise if it’s well water it might just be too “hard” having too many minerals. Might try using some purified or distilled water as an experiment.

Interesting… we have city water. I can definitely try using distilled instead for a while to see if it improves though. Thank you :-)

another good plant tip i learned that’s cheaper than distilled water is a water conditioner used for aquariums. a drop or two will clear a lot of the chemicals used to treat water. the brand i buy is called API and costs like $8 and will last a long time.

I just have a counter top water filter. I fill it with tap water and the once it filters I fill a jug with water. Occasionally I’ll even boil the water, let it cool and then add it to the water jug. The filter will likely strip out some of the minerals as well. Granted minerals can be helpful but since you don’t really know what’s in the tap water it’s likely “too much” of something in it that a filter would pull out.

i would definitely slow down watering. i do love planta, but don’t follow their watering schedule. i would invest in moisture meter and when the thing is in the 3-4 range, water it. i live in the desert where it’s hotter and i tend to water like every 20+ days.

Hmmm,.. I have noticed that Planta may have me overwatering a baby rubber plant I added before I got the Philodendron. It was doing just fine until I started following the app’s watering schedule 😢. And I do have a water meter… I guess I just need to trust it and use it more religiously. Thank you.

If you do choose to use the water schedule maybe just add much less water.
