This philodendron came in rough shape from home depot but I wanted the pure pink leaf that’s coming in, thats also in bad shape. Someone suggested that I put the entire plant in water instead of soil. I know that’s possible for propagation, but I’m not sure about a plant that’s already been potted in soil. Thoughts?

i would be careful and give it a few weeks before transferring to water. you just need to make sure all of the roots are clean of all organic matter before you transfer, which can be tedious! it helps to watch videos

Ooh that’s going to be so pretty when it recovers and starts growing again!

Yeah it’s hard enough to transfer to water when the plant is doing well, let alone being sickly and adjusting to a new environment. I’d say hold off for now. Your plant is gorgeous from coming from Home Depot, mine didn’t have one speck of variegation on it!

I would just nurse her back to health in the current medium. Give her the next six weeks to find the best location. Let her push a few new leaves and assess her health. After that, I’d remove the soil to check the roots. Amend or replace the soil without stressing the plant too much.
