This philodendron lemon lime was thriving in a 4” plastic pot but I wanted to move it to a Terra cotta pot. So I moved it to a 6” pot a few weeks ago because it looked root bound. However, it lost roots during the transplant and hasn’t rallied in the last few weeks since I transplanted it (losing leaves steadily). So today I moved it back to a 4” again (pictured). Should I chop and prop it too to fill out the pot? I’m afraid the small root system will get lost even in a 4” pot but smaller than that seems unnecessary.

    Several things can cause leaf drop. Overwatering and slow draining can cause leaf drop. The potting mix should have lots of perlite to help drainage to avoid slow drying/drainage. I recommend giving it a couple more weeks to adjust before messing with the soil/roots again if there is no overwatering issues. Fertilize regularly. Add more light. Both can cause problems if insufficient. I also add SuperThrive plant vitamins. You can add rooting hormone powder if you’re trying to generate more roots after the damage.

      I do let it dry out well between watering and the soil is a well draining blend (my other Phils thrive in it). Should I fertilize today considering it’s new soil? And it does have a grow light that’s not pictured (pic not taken at its usual site).

      Fertilizer the next time you water to avoid overwatering. No need for adding perlite if the soil mix has good drainage and is not slow drying. How often does it need water? Wait a couple more weeks to see if the leaf dropping stops on its own. It could be adjusting to the changes. Philodendrons aren’t the fastest of my plants to adapt to changes. My pothos and hoyas settle in and grow faster after repotting.

    I’d wait. You can always turn them into cuttings if they go south. There are other ammendments besides perlite to make it chunkier. If you do use it, please be sure to wear a mask! The particles are bad to breathe in

    That soil is really tight and wet. I see why you wanted to move to teracotta, but its not the pot that was the problem. Get some gravel in there or something
