Hi! About a month ago i brought a prince of orange back to my dorm, and shortly after got a black cardinal. they look great, but i haven’t been seeing any new growth. the part in the middle seems to be growing taller, but no new leaves are being put out. is this normal or can i do something to help produce leaves faster? they’re both get decent sunlight and i water when it’s almost dry. i just want to see new leaves 🥲

When you brought them home did you repot? I had a similar issue with my mcolleys finale and it turned out it had some like burlap type fabric around the root ball. Once I repotted with that removed it started shooting out new leaves like crazy!

so the PoO is in the original nursery pot , but from the looks of it, there is nothing at the bottom. my black cardinal was reported by the plant store when i got it but there is some type of fabric that is half covering the bottom, but i think it’s to catch the dirt cause the hole is really big. i can def repot tho if you think that will solve it

Resting Birch Face is referring to a “death plug” which some growers use to limit the size of the plant (I think). This is BAD for the long term growth of your plant. You won’t know it’s there until you repot and loosen the soil before putting into a new pot. Having a “screen” on the bottom of the pot is ok. It’s doing exactly what you mention, keeping soil inside the pot instead of sprinkling out the drain holes

Some houseplants go through a dormancy period where they won’t grow as much as they’d normally do like in the spring or summer. So, your philodendrons could be going through that rn. But if it’s really bothering you, try moving them closer to the light (not too close because you don’t want to scorch the leaves) and invest in a humidifier since they are tropical plants.

in the dormitory stages, does the piece in the middle still grow taller or would that stay the same too?

I’m not sure to be honest. The prince of orange looks like it’s going to get a new leaf though, so that’ll grow out a little more. But for the black cardinal, I can’t tell if it’s a sheath or it will be a new leaf. Regardless, they look healthy, so as long as you maintain a good light/water/humidity balance they’ll be just fine.

I agree with 3therea1 about the humidifier! If you can’t get one right now, you can place a water bowl next to your plants or mist them directly every morning and you should see improvement
