Hey, new pothos owner here! 🌿 I bought one about 4 months ago from Lowe’s and repotted it right away into a bigger pot with good drainage. I had it hanging in the corner of my room a couple feet from a south-facing window, but it hasn’t been doing well and keeps browning. I’ve cut some cuttings to propagate and recently moved it to my kitchen (east-facing window) to see if it helps. I usually water it when the top is dry and it’s in regular potting soil. Any advice would help so much 😭 I’m trying to save her lol

    Why did you repot it and put it into a larger pot? That was your first mistake.

      not necessarily a mistake. if it was particularly root bound, increasing the pot size would have been appropriate.

      First pothos I got lol. I thought more room in the pot the bigger and happier it’d be. Just now learning big pots hold a lot more moisture 😭 I’ve repotted it now so hopefully it’ll get happier soon.

      It had so many roots I thought I was upgrading it from a mobile home to a mansion 😂

    I wonder if it might be dealing with some overwatering. It sounds like you had the right light levels either way; both options of a few feet from a south-facing window or right next to an east-facing window are both good spots! I lean towards overwatering as the culprit with the way you described your care routine, the way so many leaves are browning- both new and old if I’m correct- and the slight yellowing on some of them as well. Don’t worry- this is the single most common issue plant people deal with and is fixable! I would recommend waiting to water until the soil is 50% dry rather than just the top of the soil being dry. You can also cut off the worst of the leaves with clean scissors to promote healthy new growth. If it continues to worsen over the next 2 weeks, it is probably worth doing a repot to check on those roots. If you do that, prune any dead, dark brown, or mushy roots with clean scissors. Then, spray the root ball with 3% hydrogen peroxide or briefly dip it to help prevent the spread of any remaining bacterial/fungal issues. Repot it into well-draining soil; something like a mixture of equal parts perlite, orchid bark, and regular potting soil would be ideal for a pothos. They prefer really well-draining, aerated soil, so sometimes regular potting soil is too moisture-retentive on its own for them. I’d also make sure that the size of your pot is no more than 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball, which will also help prevent root rot in the future. If that doesn’t help or if you have any other questions, let me know!

      Oh, and to check that the soil is 50% dry, I stick a chopstick or skewer down half-way into the dirt and check on whether it comes out clean or not. If it comes out clean and dry, you know the soil is dry enough and ready to be watered. If it comes out with any soil or moisture clinging to it, you probably want to hit “snooze” and wait a few days to check again.

      Omg wow! Thank you so much! I had no idea about spraying the roots with hydrogen peroxide that’s so cool! I repotted it into a slightly smaller pot now, but I definitely need to add some perlite or orchid bark. I had no idea they preferred aerated soil and I live in 100% humidity 😂 Your comment is such a huge help, it’s my first pothos and I love it.

    I will definitely start using a skewer or chopstick now! I notice a lot of the times the soil is so soaked underneath the dry top layer when I use my finger
