Why can I not get this Golden Pothos propagation to develop any roots??? I made 3 cuttings off of the “mother” plant and I’ve already planted the other 2 props with beautiful roots but this 3rd propagation refuses to try and develop any roots although it is growing brand new leaves so I know it’s not dead. Even using “rooting” hormone drops aren’t helping this particular plant but the other two propagation are growing now in soil without any issues in water first.
Rooting takes a while and also requires the node to be in the water or soil, not hanging outside the planter. The stem itself won’t grow root, only the nodes do
1 me gusta It had a couple nodes buried in the water but no attempts at roots yet. I’m contemplating cutting a little bit more to try and get some other nodes into the water. The first two propagations were cut identical to this one and sprouted roots without any problems. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
1 me gusta This is how mine are. The one that already had roots from being in the water is planted now and the 3 nodes it had are wrapped in a circle under the soil. The ones in the water I just top off anytime they run low. It takes weeks to see much difference and you want to avoid messing with them. Some people say change the water but I have better experiences with adding more water
Where did you get your propagation station? I like that but all I’ve got is just an empty water filled ceramic planter pot.

I’ve heard they root better in blue or brown glass containers. They need a bit of filtered light to reach the stem. I got this one in the thrift store.
Sigh, this exact thing happened with my golden pothos props, they took forever (like six months to root) despite having good nodes and new leaves.
1 me gustaI just potted up a number of golden Pothos propagations and the trick is to ignore them a little for and let them do their thing for weeks, sometimes months. You can tell it’s doing something by virtue of the fact it’s not rotting. I don’t propagate Epipremnum aureum in soil bc I can never keep the moisture level correct. They need just exactly the right conditions in soil but they are much more flexible in water. I only have a few plants that like to propagate in soil and only my Anthurium vittarifolium and Ceropegia woodii ‘String of Hearts’ didn’t have rot issue eventually. If you water propagate, it’s good to change the water every week or two. I use pH adjusted water with a diluted version of my nutrient solution. The one I just potted up looked happy but I hadn’t gotten around to changing the water and some rot had started but it wasn’t noticeable from the outside. That’s one of the reasons for regularly changing the water - you pick stuff up you might otherwise miss. I’ve never bothered but you can wrap a bit of foil around the glass prop jar to keep the roots dark as I’ve read they like that. The other thing is that when they are put into soil, after the roots have formed in water, they can transpire quite a bit so putting a clear plastic bag over them to create a prop box can really help them transition. You leave it on for several weeks to a few months and then slowly transition them to regular room humidity. I think the general advice is to wait until it grows a few leaves. Epipremnum are quite resilient plants but they are also a bit sneaky bc they will look happy as clams for ages and then start looking sick. By that time they have usually been unhappy for quite awhile, so they need a bit more attention than most ppl think. Oh and make sure they don’t have too much light while they are propagating. I use grow lights only for 12hrs a day but about half the light a mature plant would want. And don’t be deceived by all this low light plant nonsense you see about them, they love a good bit of light! They will survive in low levels of light for short periods of time but will simply die slowly in low levels of light. They are climbers who break through the canopy in the wild, which is why they like more light as they mature and require a moss pole (or equivalent) to reach phenotypic maturity. Don’t stress too much tho. They are forgiving and resilient and they propagate readily. Good luck!
