I just bought this beautiful pothos as I heard they are hard to kill. But I have a knack for killing plants. I want this one to live and every time I repot a plant, it is stunted or dies. Can someone help me here? Is this pot too big for her? I can tell she needs a bigger pot. But I don’t want to do her wrong! I plan on hanging it next to my window above the night stand on an east facing window. Also some tips on how much water to use when it’s time and the soil is dried out? I don’t want the drip tray to overfill and get my room wet 😅 I’ve also never had an indoor plant. Some advice on this would be awesome!

I’m not sure it needs a repot. Has it stopped putting out new growth? Is it dropping leaves?

No I bought it yesterday and the roots are climbing out of the bottoms and look crowded

You should gently pull it out and see if it’s rootbound. The key to transplanting is a) inspect the roots, make sure they are white and healthy. If there are any mushy, brown roots, gently remove them b) inspect for pests c) IF rootbound……add more perlite and orchid bark to “standard” indoor potting soil to make sure the plant has plenty of aeration throughout the soil d) only size the pot size up by 1-2” PREFERABLY in another plastic nursery pot e) water through until the water runs out the holes f) find a place with adequate LIGHT for the plant. All plants have different needs g) keep an eye on the plant and re-water only when at least the top two inches of soil is dry. Note that some planters prefer to dry ALL the way out before watering again, all the way through, water running out holes. GOOD LUCK! You’ve got this!!!

If the roots are coming out from the bottom doesn’t that mean it’s crowded?

No it does not mean that at all and I always keep mine in a nursery pot inside of another pot

Just a example but it might not need to be upgraded just new soil and check for root rot also.

Dani - just because the roots are coming out the bottom doesn’t mean it’s “rootbound” in the pot. Rootbound is when you gently pull out of the pot and see a TON of roots that have grown in a circle closest to the pot. If you have other specific questions about terms, just ask them here. I think you’ll find this community to be very helpful. If you get conflicting info, google is your friend 😊. Mostly people have different environments and different methods which work for them. Being a plant parent takes patience (I’m working on this) and the ability to observe your plants and what works for each one. There is A LOT of trial and error in the beginning (and forever imo)

I personally would let it settle into its new environment for at least a week before repotting. If you do want to, just get a plastic pot 1 size bigger and fill in the space with more soil. Try not to mess with the roots too much. Depending on the pot size I don’t usually use more than 1 cup of water. Chop stick to check soil dampness! If the soil sticks it’s still wet, if it comes out dry feel free to water :)
