Question.. when repottng a pothos plant would it be a good idea or not to soak the root ball in water to loosen it up before repotting it or just leave it the way it is. Just curious. I replanted my bigger one and that roots ball is huge, so it got my curiosity up about that or not. I didnt do it but just curious.. thankyou..
It’s personal preference. I take a chop stick and stick it in multiple places while trying to finger the roots out. You will not hurt it if you dunk the roots in water.
0 likesI always repot a day or two after watering, this allows the roots to be nice and hydrated before I do anything. I then wait a day or two after the repot to water again (depending on the plant). This helps minimize shocking the roots with a new space and watering all at once. It also makes it easier to loosen the roots as everything is nice and moist, but not overly saturated. The only reason I would soak a root ball prior to repotting is if I’m planning on removing ALL the soil and completely cleaning the roots. If I have no reason to investigate the roots (no rot, pests, etc.) I don’t touch the root ball at all. I use the size of pot that it’s currently in as my template, put that inside the pot I’m moving my plant to. Fill all around with dirt, then carefully remove that pot, this leaves a perfect sized hole for my root ball to sit it. Take my plant out of its pot, put it into the new one, and then fill with soil wherever it’s a little low. This method helps eliminate having air pockets in your pot due to not getting soil down into that area and allows you to easily center the plant in its new home.
