Hello! I just repotted my poor root-bound pothos into a bigger pot hoping it would help with space. But the roots are still popping out of the soil after trying everything I could to cover them. Also, the roots are not growing out of the bottom of the stems, but rather the side of the stems which I never noticed before because I was not the person who repotted it last time. This is only the second repot I think for this plant, and I have had it for 2-3 years now. I just don’t want to lose it, so please tell me if this looks okay!

Also, is it okay to have it in front of a south facing slider door like this? I just moved it today because it started to get crowded in its last spot.

Unless you just don’t like the look of the roots, it looks totally fine to me. And my pothos does fine in a south facing window

Long vines are gonna pull on the base like that. Just gravity and the weight of them ya know? The roots growing out the sides are aerial roots and totally normal. They can help give more stability. If it bothers you, you can wind the vines up and pile them in the pot. It’ll make it look fuller and they’ll grow more aerial roots down into the pot. You can just do a few and leave a few hanging if you like the look of long vines!

Thank you guys!! I was afraid it would be bad for the plant. But I will just leave it as it is, the look of the roots do not bother me. â˜ș

Also, pothos only grow roots from nodes so even the bottom roots, not arial ones, will grow out of the side of a node. They won’t send roots out of the bottom of the stem like flowers grown from seed would.

It may be doing that to support the weight of the vines. When it grows down like that the nodes on the vines with grow longer to anchor to the soil. If you want it to look less bare & create more fullness, you take one of those long vines and warp it back into the top of the soil. You can take some bobby pins to keep it attached to the soil. It will root into the soil and become more bushy at the center. Once it roots you can remove the bobby pins.
