Planta is telling me it is time to repot my pothos but I just have a gut feeling that it isn’t yet. Any advice on how to spot signs that she needs to be repotted so I don’t just have to trust the app alone?

If the plant is drying out way too fast, or if there are roots coming out the bottom. Always check the roots to be sure.

Only upsize if you’ve looked at the roots and its more than 50% roots:soil. Easiest way to do this is to wait a day after watering and then gently lift the whole plant and soil out of the pot. It should easily come out as one unit. If it doesn’t, then its best to just leave it and not try to remove it from the pot.

I would be trying to get it out after different intervals following watering. Unless its in a weird shaped pot, you can usually get them out, its just about timing. Try the first day after watering, if that doesn’t work, then maybe wait a day or two and try again. If you really can’t get it out to check, then you can do a squeeze test. If the pot feels hard and solid then you’re probably in good shape to repot. If its still squishy then its going to still have space for the roots. If its super hard when you squeeze it can mean either its root bound OR that your soil has become too compact and you’d want to do something about that anyways as it will cause issues for your plant to push roots through.
1 gillaThanks! I squeezed the pot a bit and it’s still quite squishy, so maybe she’s good for a little while longer. She’s due for a watering today so I thought it would be a good time to check but I’ll try tomorrow and in a few days to double confirm. (And maybe get an extra pot at the plant store- it’s repotting day for my tomatoes!)
