Hi! I have three pothos plants that have been in the same containers for about 3 years. I used to water them with a watering can from the top, however for the couple years I’ve been bottom watering in the sink. I’m looking for advice on what type of containers I should repot them in, what soil to use, and how to avoid growth on only one side? I’ve kept them alive all this time but I want them to thrive and look more full. Please give me any advice about how to make my pothos better! Also, if you have any tips and tricks on how to cut them and propagate to create more plants, I’ve not been successful in that so far.

    hi! i would recommend chopping and propping into the top to create a bushier top. cut where the leaf meets the stem with the little brown node on it. as long as the node is there and there is a leaf, you can put them in water and they will grow roots from the nodes in 2-3 weeks. as for even growth, make sure you rotate it every so often. a chunky soil mix and a pot with good drainage is what i would recommend, and feed it with half strength fertilizer every 2-3 watering cycles.

      Thank you for the advice! I have tried propagating before and I followed those instructions but I can never get any root growth. Maybe I’m cutting it wrong? It looks like the soil is pretty hard on top and possibly growing mold. Do you have any recommendations on what soil to buy and what specific type of pot I should get?

      i personally pot All my plants in a mix of equal parts orchid bark, potting soil, and chunky perlite. you can find these on amazon or in any store like lowe’s/home depot here’s what i would do: chop and prop several leaves with nodes - any nodes without leaves i’d honestly just put back in the pot and cover with soil. wait about 4-6 weeks (or until the roots are long and forming secondary roots in the water). dont change the water, just top up. for the whole plant, i would free it from its current pot, rinse away as much of the old soil as possible. if any roots are mushy and brown or crispy, chop them off with clean scissors or shears. in a pot 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball, pot it up with the fresh soil mix i stated above, bury any bare nodes in the empty spots, and thoroughly water to settle the soil. then top up with more soil as needed and water again. sprinkle a generous layer of cinnamon on the top of the soil to avoid fungus. as a bonus this encourages root growth!

    Hi, LizzieLovesPlants! To eco maheen, propagation is the most ideal method to create fullness for a pothos. I propagated mine for the first time in March. I cut the vines at a slant angle as opposed to straight across, and made sure that there were plenty of nodes on the stems (and at least two leaves on each) before placing them in water. I honestly did not notice the slightest root development until about week 3. Though the progress at the time was minimal, after week 3 the roots began to grow fast. It may help to very lightly slice the middle of the nodes so roots can push through easier. You can also do this with or without a root hormone powder. I also noticed that once I temporary moved my pothos to an enclosed porch where it could get a lot of indirect sunlight, the part of the vines closest to the soil were sprouting new leaves like crazy.
