hi! so i got this pothos about a month ago and repotted it in a well draining mix. i used soil mix, orchid bark, and perlite. for some reason i’ve been seeing signs of root rot even though i made sure to water it only when the top few inches are dry. i’ve only watered it maybe 3 times. so now im confused on what to do. any help would be appreciated!! i already took off so many yellowing leaves :/

Pothos actually prefer to dry out completely, so it may be overwatered

wow i had to idea. thank you so much! do you think i should just let it dry out or repot it to new soil? the leaves are very sad and im pretty sure they’ll keep yellowing.

Yellow leaves could be a low light issue as well as overwatering. It could also be signs of stress of coming into a new environment added with the stress of an immediate repot (within 3 weeks of bringing it home). Steve’s Leaves, one of the better online nurseries, will void the warranty if you repot their plants earlier than 4 weeks after delivery. Give the plants time to adjust to new environments before making major changes. Assume professional growers are using the correct soil if the plant looks lush and healthy on arrival. It’s usually not the soil causing issues. It could be changes in lighting, water, temperature, humidity and fertilizer that differ from the nursery.

i recommend using horticultural charcoal, peat moss, perlite, orchid bark, coco chips, and a potting soil mix

Pothos thrive off neglect. I let mine dry out 90-100% before I water! If you’re seeing signs of root rot I would go ahead and take a peek at the roots. Remove any mushy rotting roots and spray the root system with 3% peroxide to kill any bacteria and stop the rotting process. Repot with moist soil and water once it’s dry ☺️

The best thing about pothos is you can tell as soon as they’re thirsty. The leaves will start dull and soften, just touching the leaves can clue you in! Also lifting the pot and seeing how dry it feels. If it’s got some weight to it still, you have time. They can dry out completely and still thrive for weeks before sacrificing leaves to survive, and even then you’ll still be able to salvage them and make a full recovery! Overwatering is a sure way to kill them though 😫.
