I’ve had this pothos for 5 or 6 years. It lost all its leaves a while ago, leaving one leaf at the end. I finally took it out of the pot it came in, and the root system was astounding. Moved this guy to a large vase of water, roots started rotting so regular cleaning was needed, but he also started growing again, pushing out three new leaves! The roots are very healthy now; but then he stopped growing and the oldest leaf fell off. I was so sad, thinking he’s gone into another dormant period. Then, it was time to change his water and clean the roots, and what I noticed at the base… 😮 new growth!! Over the past couple weeks it’s grown from a little green nub to see the leaf shaping. And now, I just noticed today, there’s two more green nubs at the base!! This guy has been working hard 😊

I’ve never heard of pothos going dormant like roses in winter. The leaves dropping is not because of dormancy. It could be caused by lack of adequate lighting, insufficient nutrients, watering issues, or being root bound (more likely). I recommend cutting the vine into pieces to propagate. Leave two nodes per cutting since the length supports it. Put one node under water. Move them to a well draining potting mix when the roots reach 2 inches or more. This could take 4 to 6 weeks. Right now, the roots are just supporting root growth. I recommend removing most of the roots attached to the last piece of cut stem. I would cut off all but 4 inches of roots and plant that base piece in a well draining potting mix or you will continue to grow a bottle of roots. 🍀🪴

Oh it was definitely root bound before, no doubt. And I’m definitely not cutting him up into pieces when new growth is already forming at the nodes. Why would I cut off the roots when it’s already grown a new root system in water (I already removed what was dead), and has new leaf growth at end and the nodes closest to the roots. Is that a good thing for it to be growing back?
