Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me. My beautiful Pothos has 1 long string that has really nice full leaves on the end, but in the middle - it is a blank space. Should I cut the whole string and start over or will the blank space.. eventually fill in. Also, I want to propagate this beauty, and I am wondering if this node with leaves will work… as the last couple I tried, I had no luck getting them to root in water. (Which I find strange). Any help, I would really appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

From my experience, I don’t think the old growth will fill in on its own unless you prune it or loop it back into the soil to root. I’ve had pothos that show root within days in water, and some took a few weeks (I had to be patient lol) Make sure you cut just below a node so the roots and new leave can grow, and try to change the water every few days. Soil propagation worked better for some of my pothos. Just stick the cutting into damp soil!

Thank you. I didn’t think it would fill in either, but I had high hopes! :) I didn’t try to loop it back into soil already, so I guess I just need to cut it and silently cry at losing such a long string. Haha Thank you for letting me know it could be weeks with Pothos when propagating. I have tried both water and soil and seem to be having issues. Another quick question for you Riho, when you put your Pothos propagation into soil, do you let it callous first or just put it directly into moist soil? Thank you so much for your help!

I’m glad! I have a NJoy pothos that I waited maybe a year to fill, and I finally decided to cut two strands back +1ft, and cut them into several cuttings. Took 2 weeks for visible white roots to come out! I was sad having to cut them back, but now I’m excited I have so many more healthy siblings:) The soil option, I’ve usually just put it directly into moist soil and haven’t had issues, but I live in very hot and dry region so my pothos are pretty arid resistant, I think. Sending your pothos good energy🍀

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me. I followed all the advice and cut the strands… it is almost painful to see the length go but, I am sure my Pothos will be happier! ( I hope anyways! Haha)

Cut it back to the rim of the pot. It’s long enough to cut the vine into segments with 2 to 3 nodes each. Put 1 to 2 nodes in the potting medium. You will have enough cuttings to try different rooting material from moss, water, perlite to soil. They grow fine in water. Plant when the roots are at least 2 inches long. Fertilize once the roots emerge.

What about keiki paste? I haven’t used it myself on pothos but have seen a lot of folks apply that to the nodes to encourage growth where it is bare.
