Hi friends! I need some help. I have a golden pothos that was propped in water and it got sad when I moved it to soil. At first I thought it wasn’t getting enough light, but there was no improvement under a grow lamp. Then I learned the roots are more delicate when propped in water and I should have kept the soil moist when I first transplanted it (thank you Wolfen!) So I started doing that, but the leaves kept curling. So I decided to remove it from the pot and check on the roots. Well, they were gone. I guess it got root rot. (My nemesis!) So now I have it back in water, but I’m wondering if I should do a fresh cut on the stem to help it grow new roots? (And if so, where should I do the cut?) I don’t speak houseplant very well. 😢

Yes I would cut to fresh firm stem, making sure there are several nodes (potential roots) per piece. Your stems at this point have been compromised by their move to soil so may not recover. Always worth a try tho😀 good luck.

Thank you! I figured it’s at least worth a try to save it. I don’t have the greenest thumb, but I don’t think it’s time to give up yet haha

They will do fine as long as the stems aren’t rotten internally. You will see when you cut the stem.

The cutting is a bit long. The plant will spend energy maintaining the leaves and stems and less energy on the roots. I propagate pothos cuttings with 2-3 nodes, 4 modes max to get faster root development. I would cut off a section near your ring and toss the lower section. Remove the lowest leaf since leaves use up energy needed to go to the roots. Remove the dry bits. They can rot under water leaving bacteria. Place it in water in a warm place with the grow light. Change the water weekly or when cloudy. Fertilize when the roots appear. Put it in moist soil when the roots reach at least 2 inches. I would wait until it’s 4 inches to get a better chance of survival. I would dust with rooting hormone before planting in soil. 🍀🪴

Thanks for all the great info!! I am learning so much. I’ll give this a shot and hope for the best. I definitely will wait until the roots are longer too. I think that will make a big difference.

I have had this problem with a few of mine then I tried propagating in spagnum moss is a grow box and it worked so much better when transferring.

Note I used an old clear food container for the grow box.
