Hello! So for my birthday, my brother and his gf gave me this small plant assortment. It definitely doesn’t look the same from when I got it but I haven’t killed them just yet. I’m seeing about four different types of succulents, I would guess? Does anyone know the names of each of them and maybe the best way to take care of them?
The plant with the larger, flat leaves and reddish tips definitely looks like a form of jade, the classic succulent in the front looks like a pachyphytum, and the small one in the corner is hard to tell. If you wouldn’t mind taking a photo of it, that would be greatly appreciated, but for now I’d say like an echeveria or baby pachyphytum. As for the dying one on the left in the back, I don’t know, but I’d definitely take it out. The rest should be able to survive just fine together, but if you’d like to repot them into smaller, separate pots, that gives them all more room to grow on their own. The rest look like they’re doing fine. My best suggestion would be to repot it and remove the dying plant. I highly suggest Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix. Please avoid miracle grow’s succulent soil, as it stays wet for way too long. Check the roots for any root rot, and if there is root rot (dark, mushy, limp roots, whereas healthy ones should be firm and light in color), lemme know and I can walk you through how to treat root rot and save your succulents. As for watering, they’re all similar in how little they need water, so try waiting every 10 days in the summer to water them, then every 12-15 in the fall, and avoid watering them in the winter unless they’re still showing signs of growth. Hope this helps! Good luck!
2 J'aime The pot also seems very shallow, giving the roots very little space to grow and develop so that it can promote more growth up top. You can get a couple of small terracotta succulent pots (I’d say about 4in in diameter, so likely the second smallest size you’d find at Home Depot or Lowe’s) for pretty cheap, and Terra cotta with drainage holes is great for succulents, especially if you’re repotting them into individual pots for each plant. It’ll help prevent overwatering and give the plant and its roots much more space to grow.
0 J'aime Is this the one you were talking about?
Yes! And I still think it’s likely an echeveria or pachyphytum. Either way, all these plants can mingle just fine together in terms of watering. The real issue is that they’ll be fighting for resources and space as they grow, so repotting seperately can help avoid overwatering and give each plant more room to grow

The flat leaves with red rims is definitely an echeveria. Flowering is a kalanchoe. Other two are …. Ummm…succulents. Lol

To me it looks like the one with the flowers is a kalanchoe of some sort! A flaming katy succulent. It might be easier to repot separately so you can see what you’re working with under the soil and give them more space but they would probably all be fine with a very light watering schedule like the comment above suggested if you want to keep together. Good luck with your birthday bbs! And happy belated birthday!!
2 J'aime Definitely could’ve been a kalanchoe! Sad to say it looks like it has in fact died, but the rest of the plants look good so far, so as long as you check the plants and repot it, they should all do just fine! And succulents can get a bit stressed from repotting, so if it suddenly worsens within the week of repotting, don’t stress! It’ll recover within a week or so if it’s just shock.
1 j'aime Thank you all for the advice! I will try to repot each of them and see what I can do. Thank you! Also I wanted to see if this might be a good sign for the ones with the dying red flowers
If it started growing flowers despite the rest withering, then part of it might be dying off, in which case you can literally cut it in half at the roots to try and save it, but if it’s had that flower and the rest was dying first, it might just be that death hasn’t reached that side just yet. Just don’t wanna get your hopes up if that’s the case. A flaming Katy also need more room and a little different care than the rest, so separating that one from the rest is a good idea either way. The rest are similar in terms of their care
2 J'aime Oh yay Red flowers how pretty!! I would say for the kalanchoe just chop off the dead flower stems and let it hangout for a bit 🥳
1 j'aime I’m going to also say that whomever put that together overcrowded that pot. And put in things that need more water than the others. Repot with the right soil for each.
1 j'aime Yeah I think they got it at Harmons or big store
1 j'aime In case anyone was curious, I’ve repotted them all! Thank you again for all the help 🙏
They look adorable! I found what exact type of jade that one is btw, if you’re still looking. Lesser known variety known as a “Silver Dollar Jade” (crassula arborescens). Here’s the ID link for it. Happy to report it also can flower, and they have a subtle, but sweet scent. Good luck with them. They look really cute all lined up together! https://links.getplanta.com/Wxcy
1 j'aime Yes thank you for sharing the exact type. I was trying to research it myself and couldn’t find it so that helps out a lot 👍
1 j'aime No problem! Jades are my favorite. They’re very hardy and low maintenance. Lemme know if you need any help with them in the future. Oh, and as a lil tip, I’ve found that any with root rot or little root development from their previous potting situation do great with a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide added to their water when watering. I only do it about it once, right when I’m repotting (you can still do it after, just saying you don’t have to do it multiple times) but it’s great with cuttings, props, and starter plants when you want them to start developing new roots. Hydrogen peroxide is naturally occurring in rainwater, and helps with oxygen absorption for plants. It’s also great for killing pest eggs/larvae and it’s kinda my cure-all for dying plants. Thought I’d mention it if you’re trying to save your kalanchoe.
Thank you for the help! I appreciate it
1 j'aime No problem! Good luck! 👍
