I posted this on the succulent page yesterday but just realized it should have been here. Any thoughts? Which Aloe?! 🤪 I bought this aloe last year after buying the same one every year at Home Depot for the last few years. It grew pretty and big every year, but died every year when we had a cold snap because I was never able to bring it in. We were half way across the country one time. Another time I was very sick and the cold snap snuck up on me.🤪 Texas will no joke go from 85 to 35 in 24 hours. All that to say, I finally got it into the garage in time last year (it lives on my porch during the spring/summer/fall months) and get to enjoy the big plants in this pot again this year. And now it’s bugging me that I don’t know which variety it really is. It said “real aloe vera” but you know how accurate that is. 🤪 Is this really aloe vera or aloe massawana? I tagged it as aloe massawana last year because that’s what planta said it was. I had to give it a “trim” to not get knocked off where I was able to put it and the grow light over winter.

It grows each set of leaves about a half inch to the right of the previous set.

It only has spots on the bottom section of the leaves.

does the plant have a sticky, yellow, acrid- and foul-smelling sap? if so it most likely is aloe massawana. looks like it to me. aloe massawana are often mislabeled as aloe vera (aloe barbadensis)

aloe vera also have a much more upright and spiral growth form than a. massawana. the plant supports itself, while a. massawana will lean more as it ages. it will be easier to identify your plant once it produces offshoots and/or flowers.

That’s what was throwing me. It isn’t parallel like a fan, but it spirals less than I would expect for Aloe Vera from photos. It was supporting itself before it went into the garage for winter. It became wobly after it stretched to get more light when I was sick and unable to set up a grow light. The butterfly is there to try to retrain that stretched leaf a little more upwards. It only came out if the garage permanently a few weeks ago so it should perk up more soon.😊

I immediately threw away the cuttings this winter so I don’t know. But I did cut some off a previous plant that I think looked the same (been a few years and no photos). That one immediately shed smelly yellow sap, but then stopped and what I scraped off the inside was clear-ish gel that didn’t smell. I believe at the time, I read that the initial stinky sap was normal for aloe vera as a stress response to deter predators. So it didn’t faze me.
