Help! My grandma had this beautiful Hoya Bella passed down to her. My grandma has been gone almost 10 years and the plant as made its way across the country to different family members. Mine? Won’t grow at all. I was hoping to have them at my wedding this September to honor my grandma.. Help!! I live on the west coast of Canada in a basement suite. It’s usually between 18-22 degrees Celsius. I’m in a basement suite with no natural lights so I’m using grow lights. What’s the best soil mix, how far from the light and how often? I have some going in soil, and some trying to get roots in various propagation stations including the aquarium. Help help help!

Doug Chamberlain of Vermont Hoyas has a nice video about substrates and watering for Bellas on YouTube. He says they are SUPER prone to root rot.

Aw my stepmom’s family had an heirloom Hoya Bella too. I don’t have a Bella specifically myself, but my Hoya like chunky soil that mostly dries between watering. But that would be for ones already rooted. For the propagations, SuperThrive is a growth stimulating fertilizer that can be dosed as small as one drop, which I find handy. Not sure if it’s available in Canada 🤔 What kind of grow light do you have? If it’s a hobbyist light from somewhere like Amazon, I would put it as close as 6 inches above the plant and keep it on for 12 hours a day, if possible. If it’s a professional strength grow light, I would keep it further from the plant. They usually come with distance guidelines or have them available on the company website Sounds like it’s plenty warm, unless my C to F mental translation is rusty 😂 I do though have a seed starting heat mat to boost my special tropical propagations. If you go that route, I highly recommend a safety thermostat attachment that auto shuts off if temps get higher than they’re set to. And for extra safety, only have it on when you are at your house and awake Hop that helps!! Congratulations
