Tragedy! My Hoya Elliptica blasted its flower buds last night! Why????😫 It looked fine yesterday with one bud starting to open. The second peduncle looks like it will drop flower buds too! Some are turning yellow!😭 I fertilized it 3 days ago. I typically fertilize it every 2 weeks with 50% diluted fertilizer and SuperThrive. There are no watering issues. The soil is almost dry with some light moisture at the very bottom of the pot. No signs of root rot.

No big temperature jumps. I brought it inside at 8am on Friday to check for mites and aphids plus take a picture. Kept it inside less than 20 minutes. Only 5°F degrees difference between outside and inside air temperatures. It’s not getting excess sunlight. I don’t know the cause. 😞

😭 I’m too much of a Hoya noob to know why, but it’s always sad to lose a peduncle

Hi Sunny, If it’s her first bloom, it’s common for them to blast. Don’t be discouraged, you’re doing everything right💚

Thanks so much for the info, Amy. I will not stress about it anymore. I was just trying to figure out the cause to avoid repeating an error.

Hi sunny. I have a sigillatus that blasts when/if I water it too much before flowering. Not sure if that helps. But when reading through your post you said you fertilized three days before flowering/blast. It may been because of that-I’ve read in various places some don’t like wet feet when flowering. 🤷‍♀️ it still remains a mystery to me too. I have a 10 year old Hoya that flowers regardless of water status and rarely blasts.

It could be excess water. We had a sudden thunderstorm that dumped a lot of rain in a short period. It didn’t affect the other blooming hoyas. The elliptica maybe sensitive to overwatering. Thanks for the info.
