Tell me what you love about Hoyas and why I should consider getting one. What are your favorites?

I have 28 hoyas. I fid not understand the hype until I got my first one. They grow beautiful; they are resilient; the leaves of many of them are thick and shiny; they grow extremely well in leca and pon (only 3 are in soil). The shapes are different, the splash in some varieties... all I can say is that you acquire love for them. My recommendation: start with hoya krimson queen, hoya krimson princess, hoya mathilde, hoya sprinkles. 😀
6 J'aimeYou are definitely selling me on them, Simone. I have eyed Krimson queen before. I’ve also been curious about publicax x carnosa. I will check out some of the others you mentioned too!

I have the pubicalyx and it grows like crazy! Mine is in leca. I got it in August 2023 as a small 6 inch plant and moved it to leca in September. It is now in a 10 inch pot with leca in in self watering system. It is slmost 1 foot wide and about 1 to 2 feet tall with tendrils 1 to 3 feet long, a monster! 😀
2 J'aimeWow, it’s gorgeous. I do love that they are fast growing!
0 J'aimeNot all are that fast!
0 J'aimeI love the variety! I also am enamored by plants that look fake. The foliage is gorgeous. I love, love, love the way they look on a trellis.
2 J'aimeThank you for sharing! I bet it’s hard for pictures to do the foliage justice and I haven’t paid enough attention to them in the store. Not sure why I’m suddenly so interested, but it might be my next thing.

Very versatile plant when it comes to light and water and fertilizer within reason. All leaf shapes sizes and colors. Lots are epiphytic. Meaning they are not particular about soil. They can grow hanging or climbing. Many have interesting leaves; veiny, fuzzy, wavy, variegated leaves are just some of the leaf types. Most have thick leaves that are hard to break when moving the plant around. Pet friendly. Most are low maintenance. Nice blooms. Over 600 species and even more varieties. A great basis for learning about the genus.
4 J'aimeYour post makes me excited to give them a go!
1 j'aimeVery well said from someone who I’ve come to respect for their knowledge and advice on all things Hoya!

I love the flowers and the interesting leaves. Many are easy to grow, but many are difficult. Good quality, chunky soil mix is important as is proper watering and lighting. Most H. carnosa are easy to grow and easy to find. If you find a specific variety that you like, do an internet search for the conditions it prefers or will tolerate. I live in a very dry climate so I don’t buy ones that require high humidity (many of which do).
6 J'aimeThank you for the tips! And your plant is stunning on that wall. How long did it take to grow that long?
0 J'aimeAnd what type is it?

Wow, that is amazing. Both its age and only being on the wall for a year. ❤️

If cared for properly, they can live for decades. There are so many species and the intricacies of each leaf and bloom are easy to get lost in in a meditative way. Many of the blooms have interesting scents, like butterscotch, chocolate, floral and citrus. Some have an off putting scent like dirty socks but either way, unique. I’m a collector for the foliage, though I love their flowers. The variety of leaves and their specific features and history keep me addicted. I also love that even the most common of Hoya varieties are still uncommon in the plant world.
1 j'aimeI love the poetry of your reply, dirty socks and all. lol. And the fact that they can live for decades is beautiful and special. You have definitely all convinced me to give them a go!

And there’s the bloom that smells like that which we shall not talk about 🤣
1 j'aimeOoh, that sounds intriguing…or maybe frightening? Which plant is this? ☺️

Depends on your nose I guess. Let’s just sayyyy… Hoya vitellina has quite the reputation 🤣 she runs with Hoya clemensiorum and Hoya oblongicutifolia…
0 J'aimeHahaha. Good to know. I will have to remember those girls. 😂

When I first got into plants I didn’t care very much for Hoyas. But I was a fan of funky plants so of course I had to get a Hoya compacta and at the same time I got a Hoya mathilde bc I loved the silver specks and now I have a Hoya pubicalyx as well. I honestly love the beautiful thick leaves and all my Hoyas have sliver splashes on them and I love watching them grow and get there specks bc they are all different. I 10000% recommend and they are easy to care for in my opinion
1 j'aimeThanks for sharing, Brenda! I love it when the variegation on each new leaf is a surprise.
0 J'aimeI have a black margin and a pubicalyx x carnosa on the way to me. Really looking forward to learning these plants.
