This tiny cutting, I gave a chance to, has surprised me today! He’s seriously not much bigger than the picture on the right, holding the base…how would you suggest planting him once he’s got secondary roots? All I can figure is to slightly burry the leaf!?
Hoyas have this awesome ability to use the lower part of their stem, the part under the first node, as a sort of straw. It’s apparently not at all like propagating aroids where all the hormones are in the node. As more epiphytic plants, Hoyas can grow roots from anywhere on their stems and, as long there’s a node, it will not be a zombie. I would wait to see if it grows roots lower on the stem and go from there. I have had a terrible time with pests, so I’m trying out semi-hydro with pon as my medium. I have actually had really good luck with it so far. I think it’s especially good for Hoyas that have a preference for moisture as they don’t survive me being late to water them in a potting mix. I have to provide all light and nutrients myself bc of my verandah and tank rain water, so it has actually been less work than potting mix is for me than it might’ve been. The best part is that the roots they grow as cuttings are perfect for semi-hydro. Carnosas (which I think this is) are also tanks. They can take a lot more environmental change than some of the fussier varieties. I practiced on my Carnosas before I tried semi-hydro on my slightly fussier ones, though I don’t have any I would consider truly difficult (I have my aroids for that lol). No matter which path you take, I highly recommend a clear pot bc, aside from being able to see the roots, you can ensure you are thoroughly watering them. It might seem silly, but I almost lost my two carnosas bc they came in a black nursery pot that was too big and their potting mix was not soaking up the water properly. It was not coco based, so I have no idea why, but I only just caught them (and a couple of others from the same place) before dry rot took them. Though I suspect it would have been wet rot took take them if it had absorbed the water, bc the pot was seriously too big. Good luck!!
2 J'aime I did get success with a longer cutting, Gwen, she grew roots in water then gave me new growth after being potted! Happy little lady!
