Hi Hoya Hoarders! I need some advice from the Hoya experts out there. I just noticed that my Krohniana silver has some shriveled leaves. I definitely have not been over watering. I allow her to dry out completely before watering. I’ve only been bottom watering and I use filtered water from my fridge. She is located in a south facing window and gets a lot of direct sunlight. She is not directly under the air/heating vent, as the vent is on the ceiling and I have high ceilings, however, it does blow towards the window she is in and can get cool in that area. but with it being a south facing window, it also can stay warm in that area as well. With all that information, what could be causing the shriveling of the leaves?

Hi Melanie. Since she is growing, I wouldn’t change much. Normally I would say to check the roots but not this time because of the new growth. However, if the wrinkled leaves can be isolated to one vine, that would suggest an issue with that part of the plant. I also notice she has a good bit of splashy leaves, verses silver leaves. She may need a little less light to maintain the silver. Just keep an eye on how the wrinkling progresses and remember more light equals more water requirements, less light equals less water requirements. So, if you move it you may need to adjust. I wouldn’t rule out the air vent situation. The humidity level in the house etc.

You can get root rot with inconsistent watering too. If roots get too dry they are compromised and can’t take up water when it arrives, and then rot sets in. In my experience (limited, say 3-4 cases) wrinkled leaves on a Hoya that isn’t neglected often seems to mean root rot. As herekitty notes it may be limited to some but not all vines if it is present. Those vines will probably continue to decline and may eventually pull out easily or fall out. When in doubt take some cuttings and start trying to propagate…. Just in case….
