I need Hoya Help! I got this Hoya compacta about 6 months ago and it got wrinkly 3 months later (second pic). In hindsight I think it was probably underwatered? It stayed wrinkly, then my toddler knocked it over twice about a month ago. Now it’s still wrinkly but the leaves have started to yellow and drop (not just base leaves). Reddit said to water it and see if it plumps up in the next day or two, it didn’t. Then Reddit said either the roots had dried up and died or had rotted. So I checked the roots. To my inexperienced eye, they look fine on both plants? The root balls seem proportional in size to the plants, I don’t feel any that are mushy. I mean, they are thin and pretty limp. I see very thin hairlike roots that I am assuming are what Reddit was referring to that might have dried and died. Maybe I just don’t know what healthy Hoya roots are supposed to look like? So now I’m at a loss. TIA 🙏

    My rope Hoya did wrinkle when I under watered it. Unfortunately planta app doesn’t really get Hoyas too well and after direct contact with their plant team, they have told me to water the Hoyas more often than the app says. My other Hoyas were being underwatered too and were showing signs. So now I water all Hoyas every 10 days with them being in well draining soil. Sometimes sooner if soil looks dry. The yellow leaves will drop, you may lose some of the other leaves, but hopefully can retain some and then start growing again from what’s left.

      Yes. Either get cactus soil and add more perlite or whatever soil you have and add more perlite. And water every 7-10 days. Be patient in the beginning and don’t try to catch up by watering too often in the beginning. You can also try water propagation to see if the roots can grow more before potting in soil. Just clean off roots of any soil and place in distilled water and change when it gets slimy or green. I have propagated all of my Hoyas this way EXCEPT the rope Hoya. I have never propagated a rope Hoya but I would assume it does just as well as all of my other 13 different types of Hoyas that I have water propagated easily.

      Or it looks like you have 2 plants. So maybe try one and one. One in water propagation and one in better soil and see which one does better, faster. lol

    You’ve got a fair amount of dead roots there. The little threads are parts where most of the root has rotted away. The roots can die from underwatering and/over watering. I have a lot of Hoyas but compacta is one I haven’t had success with. Good luck!

    Ok I rinsed the roots and took a closer look at them and they were definitely dead. The outer shaft of almost all of them had broken and separated. So they both got a severe haircut (check the before and after pics) and I’ll try to water prop both of them so I can watch for roots or more rot. Thank you guys!

    Darn, that happened to my green H. compacta. She died.😱 My variegated compacta has never done this. I’d say that it does come from inconsistent watering. I would wash the roots, first get all of the organic matter off of them, then soak them 10 minutes in a hydrogen peroxide/water bath of 1:2 one part H2O2 two parts H2O. Then, you should be able to tell if you want to water propagate them and rehydrate the roots or stick them in soil, depending on root health
If you go w/soil stick it into a tiny pot so the roots can fill it quickly and then it will focus on vegetative growth. They are slow growers (probably because we tend to underwater them. ) Let us know how it goes! Oh I am happy for your post, B/C my first picture looks like she is getting a little wrinkly too. The second picture on the other side of the plant looks better..
