I’ve had this Hoya Compacta for three to four years now and I repotted it in this tall pot with succulent soil (before I knew better) and I really do t know what to do with it. I do t have a place to let it cascade like I’d like it to and want to repot it and am thinking about propagating some from the two longest pieces. The picture of the full pot is an older picture, the other two were taken today. If I take some of the length off of these, where should I cut? Is it normal for them to have that long space with no leaves like in the one picture? As you can see there is new growth happening now! Thanks for any tips on what to do with it. Also, after blooming, do the peduncles stay on the plant and it bloom from those again or do they put them out in other places? This one had two blooms last year and that’s the first time it bloomed. Thanks again!

Your compacta is likely to die in its current pot and soil. The pot is much too deep and it needs a chunky soil mix (soil, bark, perlite/pumice, charcoal). If the soil doesn’t dry out in a reasonable time between waterings then it will get root rot. Compactas really like to dry out (but not for too long, either). And yes, they bloom from the same peduncles over and over. 🌸

Thanks! Yes, I’m planning to put it in a shallower pot with either lecuza pon or a chunkier loose mix. Do you use pon? I’ve only got two plants in it and I’m not sure if I like it or not.

Personally I do t like Pon. I looked into it and it just wasn’t for me

Do you use self-watering systems? I have some for my Hoyas, but if you keep water in the outer vessels, as in the little plastic 2-cup setups, they’re not actually ever drying out, are they? That’s one thing I stress about with them. I’ve just ordered four new plants from Etsy and I just wonder about them getting off to a good start.

I don’t like self watering systems because that can bring in a host of pathogens, risk root rot and bug growth. The list goes on. Fungus gnats are not fun to battle in my personal opinion. Also the plant needs air to its roots to help it grow. Unless it’s a unique plant like the lotus, which needs mud. 😉

I battle fungus gnats constantly! I’m going to be repotting the ones I have in those little cups very soon.
