Hello, was hoping to get some insight into this new plant my sister got for me as a gift. I’m a little bit of a plant novice but I’m trying to learn. It’s labeled as a Hoya kerri which according to my internet sleuthing seems correct. I got it just under a month ago and have only watered it once. I’m a bit worried that her one leaf has developed a small black patch that I don’t think was there last week. She also came to me with one of her leaves having brown patches on the underside. I am slightly worried it could be a fungal type infection? Idk if any of this is normal, it doesn’t seem like it is but I wasn’t sure what it might be or how to fix it :( If anyone has answers or just tips for her in general I would really appreciate it. Thank you 😊

    My favorite tip for hoyas: if you pinch the leaf and the sides easily come together, it needs water. If the leaf is solid and wont pinch shut, it means it has enough water & you can wait :) side note - be gentle and careful when pinching the leaf. i have snapped a few hoya leaves this way because they were still stiff (from being watered). But its pretty fool proof for the most part :)

    It looks like overwatering. That can lead you to water. I’m surprised it can go a whole month and not need water. It may be in too much soil (pot too large) or the ceramic pot is holding drain water because the ceramic pot has no holes? Have you repotted or increased the pot size? If so, is the new pot or more than 2 inches wider than the previous pot? Have you replaced all of the soil? Hoyas like a snug pot, in general. They can grow very large in a small pot because many hoyas store water in their vines and leaves. I don’t think it’s fungal. I think it’s excess water. I recommend removing the pot. Checking for root rot. Use soil that has a lot of aggregates like perlite to increase drainage. Use soil with a chunky mix including coconut husk cubes (coco coir) that allow more oxygen to the roots. Hoyas are tree climbers like bromeliads in their native habitats. They live on rain water runoff from the trees and get lots of oxygen on their aerial roots. They don’t heavily rely on soil roots. Those roots tend to be smaller. 🍀🪴

      It’s not actually in the ceramic pot, it’s just a sturdy, pretty spot to keep her 😅 It’s still in the nursery pot it came in, it’s 5 inches across and seems to be general potting soil mix and the pot has drainage holes. Maybe that soil isn’t the best for her, I’ll attempt to repot into some chunkier potting mix!

      Standard potting soil holds too much water for hoyas because it usually contains peat. A chunky mix is better. The pic shows my pots from the nursery with orchid bark and perlite plus worm castings for more nutrients.
