Please tell me what Iā€™m doing wrong. I have two hoyas that have remained roughly the same size for the last eight months. Itā€™s like they are frozen in time. I have them both under grow lights, I repotted them both about a month ago in chunky soil, and I fertilize lightly with every watering. I use plantaā€™s advice and I allow the soil to dry up between watering. One of them is slightly droopy right now, but thatā€™s because itā€™s almost watering day. There are no pests, no signs of damage or blemishes on either plant. I live in Hawaii so the temperature is usually 70-80 and the humidity is usually in the 70ā€™s. I want these guys to thrive! Thoughts?

    Oh I also want to add that I never mist them. When I repotted them, they both had what I would call underdeveloped rootsā€¦ like, I would have expected more given the size of the plants. They were pretty sturdy and didnā€™t fall apart when I handled them. I looked at photos of Hoya roots online and people say they tend to have small wispy roots so I donā€™t think itā€™s root rot.

    It could be low light and/or the pot being a bit too big. Hoyas like a tight pot with only an inch of soil around the root ball. They can spend months growing roots to fill the excess soil. They will eventually start growing leaves and vines again. The yellow pot looks too wide for the base of the plant I would reduce the pot size by half. I would put them in a south or west facing window with sheer curtains to filter too intense sunlight since you are in a hot climate. A grow light within a foot Iā€™ll help. Run it 12-14 hours a day. šŸŖ“šŸ€

      Wanted to come in to support this advice. Iā€™ve had Hoyas take 12-18 months to start growing above the surface after they felt sufficiently filled out below the surface. Hoya roots are not at all wispy when theyā€™re healthy. In addition to Sunnyā€™s repot advice, I would suggest growing them in clear pots so you can watch the roots grow. Just put the clear pot in a cute planter. Youā€™ll learn so much doing this and itā€™ll make caring for them easier. Side note, please use caution using the AI schedule. Short term or just starting itā€™s good for the very short term, but long term youā€™re going to want to manually set that schedule. Iā€™ve lost a few too many plants using the appā€™s schedule verse listening to the plant šŸ¤£

      I agree with Sunny & Night. The pots are too big and they could be under an insufficient grow light. What type of grow light are you using and how far away are they from it? You might have more success putting them directly in a south or west window. I second the smaller clear pots with a chunky soil mix and just use the pretty pots as cover pots.

      @Robin, Sunny summed up my thoughts exactly. Like Sunny referred to, if the pot is too big they spend time growing roots to fill it. The leaves a secondary and will grow once the roots are snug. To avoid that keep them in a smaller pot.

    Maybe flat mites. Get an electronic magnifier.Attach it to your phone and see it bigger. Look all over where there should be new growth.
