I’m new to this group and don’t even have a Hoya yet but I already love the plant. Where is the best place to buy one and what is the best and showiest for a beginner?

Welcome! Hoya Krimson Queen is extroverted and easy to grow in very bright indirect light. Brighter light keeps the pink colors rich. Let the soil dry out between watering. Grow in a chunky mix and not the standard potting mix or they will quickly rot. Keep in the same size pot as long as possible because they like to be root bound. Repotting will put energy towards the roots. Blooming can take awhile until the plant is more mature.

I do genuinely believe that any plant can be a beginner plant— it’s all about how much time and effort you are willing to spend on research and understanding it. That said, my first Hoya was a publicalyx and has been super easy care, but not all that showy. 🙈

Welcome to a new addiction! My first was a Hoya Kerrii, they’re adorable and super easy. Hoya Obovata, same thing, cute and easy. Know that Hoya’s are epiphytes, so they don’t need soil and actually do best in a super chunky media like coco chips and #3 perlite. For this reason though, fertilizing is crucial. I get the bulk of my Hoyas on Facebook in the group, US Hoya Market.

Hello! My first Hoya was a Hoya Nummularioides! I still have it too. I know Lowe’s can sometimes sells common Hoyas like Carnosa Krimson Princess which is one of the most easier Hoyas. and the occasional Curtisii usually in the full swing of springtime. I have better luck at going to a local nursery. They usually have varieties of Hoyas.

my hoya obovata is my favorite. in high light and with regular water (when the oldest leaves feel flimsy) it grows pairs of beautiful waxy leaves quite fast; it’s worth noting i fertilize regularly and it is planted in coco husk chunks with minimal amendment (worm castings and a small amount of pumice/perlite)
