Lookie here… my first Hoya! In all my years of plant care, I’ve never had one, so I don’t have any idea what to expect, or what to do. Ain’t she cute! Any tips would be greatly appreciated… TIA!

NightI have mine in a coconut husk/coir and perlite mix. I bottom water mine every time. Fertilize and keep her clean as needed. Other than that have fun!

Is that coconut husk/coir mix something you purchased, or something you made? Can you tell me a bit more about this soil that you’re using? TIA…

Yeah! So I mix that myself. I get all of my potting medium components off of Amazon. I usually buy the Plantonix brand but will buy from others if price or availability is a factor in the moment I need restocking. My mixture for all of my Hoyas are essentially recreations from Unsolicited Plant Talks, Basie Plants, and Vermont Hoyas(Doug Chamberlain) on YouTube. I would highly suggest going and checking them out to further your Hoya knowledge in general. All three use similar but different mixes and that varies per Hoya and also what works for you in your home situation but most everything I’ve learned from has been 100% valuable Hoya knowledge.

TXS again for all of your newsy posts! When I was going back and re-reading them, I noticed you mentioned that you bottom water; is that for a particular reason? I ask because I’m wondering if I shouldn’t get water on my Hoyas leaves. I know bottom watering is good for all plants, but I don’t usually use that method of watering. Is drenching the soil from the top a bad idea for this plant. TIA!

SunnyYou can always buy a bag of orchid mix containing coconut husk if you can’t find a prepackaged hoya mix. Both plant types are epiphytes and like a chunky mix with excellent drainage. It’s less bags to store than mixing it yourself especially since you only have one hoya, right now. You can always create your own recipe and make it yourself when your collection grows. 🍀🪴

Both hoyas and orchids live in trees getting water from the rain water run off. Only the hoya is lightly rooted in the loose under brush. Both plant types rot in standard potting soil because it’s too dense holding too much water. Cool plants. 🌱 💕🌱

TXS… great update! Mine looks like it came in potting soil with some pearlite; is that normal? You’d think they would have planted it in a chunkier mix for the plants health, right?! How soon should I do a repot with the orchid mix I have? TIA!

It’s doing well in the current mix. I recommend leaving it. Lots of perlite provides the drainage. You can change to a chunkier mix or a mix without peat moss at the next repotting. My photo shows the variety of hoya potting mixes nurseries use. I have not repotted any of these. I avoid repotting if the hoya is growing and looks healthy. They can stay in and prefer smaller pots.
