Hi there! 👋😊 I’m pretty well-acquainted with houseplants, but very new to Hoyas, and was wondering if it’s possible to simply let a Hoya grow out to become a trailing plant. I have yet to really see any Hoyas with longer stems without a trellis, so I was wondering if the trellis is necessary or not. I’ve been really considering trying Hoyas out, but I’d love to know if I can turn it into a trailing plant that I could place into a macrame hanging basket. TIA for any responses! (I’d also love to hear what types others would recommend trying first, or their personal favorite Hoyas.)

    No Hoya expert, but I do have a fair number of them! From what I understand, whether they want to climb or not is somewhat type dependent. I have a crimson queen who thrives climbing, but also a wyetti which has been doing just fine hanging. In my experience, they’re incredibly hardy and if you switch from trellis to trailing and other way around, they adapt well. Added pic of my crimson and compacta (didn’t have one of my wyetti!), which is hanging.

    Yes, I think you can grow almost any hoya hanging. All of mine are hanging except obovata and latifolia, because they're large and I guess I didn't want to deal with that. And mathilde because it just looks so pretty on trellises. My krimson queen sits on a high shelf and hangs way down. It reaches for things but doesn't mind if it doesn't find anything. Also here is a picture I just took of my hoya bella which is starting to look very nice I think (latifolia bloom on the left) the bella is several plants together for fullness, all my hanging hoyas are

    I'm new too. I've been looking up the varieties I have on Instagram to see how others are growing them and how they look each way. The other day I found a couple of videos from Sober Plant Guy on YouTube where he talks about which he trellises, which he lets hang, and WHY he decides to do each. Having someone give me the why is a huge deal for my autistic brain because I can take that and apply it to future plants instead of blindly following a rule that I don't understand.

    I grow all three of mine trailing. I have Hoya carnosa, Hoya carnosa 'krimson princess', and Hoya wayetii. Those seem to love to trail. Other varieties might perfer to climb, but I've yet to see a Hoya that doesn't look good in a hanging basket. 😉

      My personal favorite right now is Hoya wayetii, but on my wishlist is Hoya polyneura and Hoya mathilde. I love the way both look when grown in lower light.
