Labeled only as Hoya Carnosa Tricolor - can anyone tell me more about the true name? Is it a Princess? Thanks!
Labeled only as Hoya Carnosa Tricolor - can anyone tell me more about the true name? Is it a Princess? Thanks!
Tricolor is a commonly mistaken label for your Hoya. The patented name (now expired) for the original (radiation induced daughter of H.carnosa âtricolorâ) is H. carnosa âRubraâ The trade name used for marketing at the time was KRIMSON PRINCESS (not yelling. Thatâs how you write a trade name). The confusion comes when people donât realize that there are many cultivars circulating. Properly, for this particular Hoya and mine đ we would say H. carnosa (inner variegated). I always add âthe one commonly referred to as KRIMSON PRINCESS. Iâll see if I can attach a couple interesting images.

Well, kindađ You have an H. carnosa (outer variegated) and an H. carnosa (inner variegated) The trade names are reserved for those that can be traced. And your welcome đ

The trade names were attached to those specific cultivars. Other cultivars existed before and after the patented ones. We probably donât have KP or KQ just outer and inner variegated unknown cultivars (not the patented ones)

For those that are not botanists, nomenclature academics, historians, etc⊠yes the world refers to the aforementioned Hoya as KP and KQ and has been for years, albeit incorrectly. If selling or trading the label should read, H.carnosa (inner variegated) Its an ICBN thing and can be very confusing đ€·đ»ââïž
