reducing plant collection // multiple genera hi hoya lovers! iā€™ve seen a lot of posts from ā€œplant influencersā€ recently about reducing their personal collections, so itā€™s inspired me to reflect on which plants bring me the most joy, & which i could potentially remove from my collection. recently (last year or so) iā€™ve really enjoyed growing hoyas, theyā€™ve become my favourite genus, & approximately half of my collection. i am contemplating changing the direction of my collection to be primarily hoya, & i am wondering if you enjoy keeping multiple genera, or if youā€™re happy with just hoyas! thanks!

    If I had to downsize I would lose my alocasias and calatheasā€¦theyā€™re drama queens and it drives me nuts when I get a blemish on a leaf. I would keep my tiny dancer alocasia maybeā€¦lolā€¦sheā€™s alright!

      Yeah, itā€™s nice to be free of the drama queens. When I moved, I let go of a lot of long-time sufferers that I had been trying in vain to bring back to health. It was hard and I felt guilty, but it really really helped the moving process, settling into my new space, and feeling like my collection as a whole was healthy. I had an alocasia flying squid for a very brief window of time lol. Very cool plant, but being one of the smallest alocasia (possibly THE smallest), it really needed more care than anyone can realistically provide šŸ˜‚

      alocasias and calatheas? never heard of them! lol just kidding, but theyā€™re too fussy for me. plus i tend to lean towards underwatering, so not a great combination.

    I love my Hoya. I have 160+ plants and 1/3 are Hoya. Which is a good chunk of my collection. However I donā€™t think I would be able to give up my monsteras, philodendrons, dieffenbachia or calathea. Many of which Iā€™ve been growing since before Hoya came back in fashion. Iā€™d probably cry. šŸ˜‚

      haha when i think of my collection, iā€™m holding out for about 10 cacti/euphorbia/succulents, around 5 philodendron & a couple of monsteras (plus a few stragglers i canā€™t think of). differnbachia and calathea donā€™t bring me any joy unfortunately, especially calathea šŸ«£ā€¦

    About half of my plants are snake plants which I love because theyā€™re easy and fun to look at without needing much from me. So although I have 60-70 plants, I am only spending time on less than half of them. The rest of my collection are primarily philodendrons, peperomias or marantas/calatheas, which are about easy-medium difficulty for me. I donā€™t think thereā€™s anything wrong with reducing your collection to plants that you love, and that love you back šŸ˜‚. I definitely wouldnā€™t want to have a large collection of challenging plants, but the type of plants that are easy vs. challenging will differ from person to person.

      Snake plants are underrated! Thereā€™s some really cool ones and theyā€™re still so undemanding

      i only have a sanseveria sayuri, forgive me if itā€™s now reclassified, iā€™m not a snake plant girl. & i do love how laid back it is, plus since theyā€™re large very quickly, theyā€™re nice for decor and taking up bigger spaces!

    Hoyas are my side piece šŸ˜‚ Most of my collection is philodendrons. I also like other fast and/or showy growers like monstera, epipremnum, and tradescantia. But I also dabble in succulents and semi-succulents. I have been strongly requesting to not get into cactus by my partner šŸ˜… But yeah, Iā€™m fascinated with Hoya, I love their shapes and textures. But I feel like I havenā€™t been successful enough with the ones I have to spend on the uncommon Hoyas that have caught my eye. If I canā€™t make a mature plant happy, dropping $25+ on a cutting doesnā€™t seem wise at all lol. I hope to get into them more some day. And also mini orchids. One local green house has the COOLEST tiny orchids with flowers smaller than your pinky nail. But I donā€™t want to spend ~$60 on one just to watch it die šŸ„²

      iā€™ve found hoya are a nice transition plant from succulents/cacti to leafy tropicals, or vice versa. i started with succulents/cacti, and thatā€™s all i knew. i tried some pothos/philodendron, but i ended up falling in love with the hoya mathilde, which got me into hoyas. if youā€™re not confident about hoya watering, which is probably the primary cause of hoya death, iā€™d recommend checking out some videos on different hoya substrates. get a carnosa variety, maybe krimson queen/princess, or even mathilde, and grow it in a substrate that youā€™re comfortable with. drainage is key, but if youā€™re known to overwater, you could use a terracotta pot. i grew in leca for the first time with one of my hoya mathildes, and it ended up turning out fine, just a small learning curve at first!
