Do you trellis….or not? Are there some Hoyas that really need to be trellised? I’m conflicted and my Hoyas are growing like crazy.

I don’t use one for a Hoya but I use one for some micans I should probably have on a moss pole.

I've read that if their tendrils point up, they're looking for support so a trellis is definitely helpful. I like to learn about where each of my Hoya species grow naturally so I can try and mimic that as best as I can. If in their natural habitat they grow up and inside the trunks of trees, I trellis them. I've got a Fungii that is hanging but a lot if it's tendrils use the straps of the plant hanger for support. My sp aff Burtoniae just hangs. Many people just go by personal preference, so you're free to do that as well.

Thanks
0개 좋아요I think it’s personal based on what you like, available room and the plant. Most of my Hoya are trellised because I like them contained for the space I have.

I think they grow better trellised. Also, those stems can grow long and wild looking for something to grab onto. A few slow growing Hoyas I have I didn’t have a trellis and once I added a trellis I had new growth fairly quickly. Also, I think the leaves seem to grow larger when trellised.

When you trellis wind them counterclockwise and make sure to leave the end of the tendril pointing upwards. If not, sometimes they die off if left pointing down. A naked vine can start to produce leaves if given ample support. If the plant doesn’t think it can support a leaf it won’t grow them or it will make them smaller. Unsolicited Plant Talks has an excellent video on trellising Hoya on YouTube.
