got a krimson princess about a month ago, the nursery i got it from potted it for me but i’m worried that maybe they put it in too big of a pot…haven’t had to water it bc my little meter still says it’s wet down in there…should i repot in a smaller pot? the plant doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of distress from root rot but worried it could quickly become the case what do you all think?

If its looking okay I would wait. Sometimes the double stress might be a bit much. That being said… Hoyas do well being a bit root bound. Ideally you want the pot to be 2-3” larger than the root ball. Drainage is important. But if you monitor your soil well then it should be fine. Hoyas can hold a lot of water in their leaves, so I let mine almost completely dry out before I water again.

What sort of soil is it in? How big is the plant and pot? Hoya roots need a lot of breathing room, so a very chunky substrate with less (or none at all) soil is best. I personally would repot if the soil it's been in has been holding moisture for a month. Not necessarily because the pot is the wrong size, but because the substrate holds moisture for too long and Hoya are prone to root rot. My Krimson queen's and princess's are all in a mixture of coco chips, horticulture charcoal, perlite and a tiny bit of worm casings. No soil. Hope this helps.

thanks! i’m leaning towards repotting just because my moisture meter continues to read wet and has never gone down to moist…i dont want to shock it but i feel like a month is long enough between repotting? the pot it was in at the nursery was a 6” and the pot they put it in when i had them repot is 8” i think…

Definitely! I also would want to see the roots seeing as I didn’t repot initially. Checking for new growth, rotten roots, etc. As the poster said above, loose well draining will be a better medium for your plant.

I also would suggest moving forward, do your own repotting. Its a great way to check the health of your new plants coming in, as well as you getting to choose what medium’s your plants are in vs whatever the nursery is using.
