anyone else notice this app recommending severely under watering your hoyas? for example i have an obovata in a 4” pot that needs to be watered every 3-5 days but planta recommends i water every 9 days! i think i’d have a dead plant if i waited that long routinely. i’m also having to set up custom schedules for my other hoya species as it seems to recommend watering about half as much as the plant actually needs
I’ve set up custom watering for 70+ plants! Planta has issues with water. But, it is accurate for my indoor plants in 4 inch or smaller pots
1 mi piace it usually recommends overwatering which is why i was confused when i noticed hoyas are the opposite. custom watering schedules seem to be the way to go with this app regardless right now

1 mi piace That is weird. I have over 250 plants too. I don’t take what the app says for gospel though. I use it as a reference to check that plant and more often than not it’s bang on correct. Sometimes it isn’t if it’s been cloudy for a week and then the plant hasn’t needed to soak up as much water. I find it really makes a difference how much light a plant gets. If it isn’t getting proper light then Planta will more often than not tell you to water sooner than you should. Planta assumes you are giving the plant the correct/adequate amount of light and I think most people misunderstand the amount of light their plants need. That’s my 2 cents anyway.
4 Mi piace that’s kind of awesome it works perfectly for you. my larger pots, despite the plants being in appropriately bright light, have always needed to be skipped once or twice, same with smaller pots to a lesser extent. i’m thinking it’s because the climate here in the summer is very humid to the point where almost every morning is foggy, i don’t have as much of an issue with watering in the winter time.
1 mi piace Yes level of humidity would be a huge factor for sure. Normal humidity where I live in central Canada is 30% in the summer and 15% in the winter so very dry all the time so I never have to adjust for that except inside a cabinet i have with a small humidifier for some plants that need it.
1 mi piace that’s wild to me, here (east coast usa) in the winter the driest it gets is 50% humidity, as high as 90% in the summer. i’ve seen 95-100% some foggy mornings, especially late summer. i’m wondering how you keep so many hoyas happy in such a dry climate!
1 mi piace Yes the dry air here is a challenge for sure. Especially when we have to start turning the heat on in our home soon. The Hoya are pretty adaptable I think but likely grow slower than they could with higher humidity.

I have 100 hoya and most are in Leca, I usually use recommended settings for leca unless it’s just a crazy drinker. I find I snooze the recommendations by 2 days often. However for my soil plants I’ll keep this in mind but agree with the comment that it’s all about the light they get.
2 Mi piace the light is something obvious i hadn’t considered but definitely worth thinking about. most of my (considerably fewer) hoyas are in southern exposure so this may contribute to them drying out faster than planta expects. i do have the sites set to full sun though…

The app recommends 10-12 days for mine and it's pretty spot on. I only have one (my Caudata Sumatra) that requires water a little more frequently. I always use my moisture meter regardless of what the app says. It often wants me to water more frequently than my Hoya would want. They prefer to dry out completely before being watered through, especially the ones w/thicker leaves.
0 Mi piace i pot most of my plants in a very chunky mix so they tend to dry out faster, i’d be a little concerned about tropical plants like hoyas still being damp after a week

I have about 150+ Hoya and yes I have noticed this. At first I’d go to water and some would be bone dry and a few didn’t like that at all. The thin and small leaf varieties that don’t like to be too dry. If you let a Hoya Serpens totally dry out too may times you’d probably end up with root rot. I check my more sensitive/needy Hoyas weekly. Some places in your home have drier air, more air flow, more heat/sun, creating little micro-climates all over one space. Also some do just like way more water than others. Basie Plants on YouTube has a great video about what varieties of Hoya like more water, also Unsolicited Plant Talks. The owner is a magical hoya wizard and she has the best tips ever. Planta is a great guide but not necessarily the gospel on plant care.
