Hi! I’m looking for recommendations on a good beginner Hoya. I tried my hand at a hoya compacta variegata… did not go well 😢.

Hoya linearis has been an easy one for me it doesn’t look like most Hoyas but I love it. Just needs lots of light.

Most of the popular hoyas are good if you don’t have much experience with hoyas. Check out Plant Proper online. They sell smaller, starter size, hoyas from $15 to $20. I own most of those varieties. Other stores are Etsy sellers, Steve Leaves and Canopy Plant. These are good starter hoyas: Obovata, Lacunosa (Mint, no caps, snow caps, Royal Flush), Khroniana (Silver, Black), Heuschkeliana (non variegated), Krimson Queen (pictured), Krimson Princess Australis Lisa, Carnosa, Chouke, Retusa, Burtoniae, Wayetti, Pubicaylix, Krinkle 8, Meliflua, Iris Marie I’m not sure why your plant did not survive. I’m guessing a water, pests or lighting issue. Hoyas are native tree climbers getting moisture from the rain running off trees and rocks. Their root systems are smaller that tropical plants of similar size. They suffer quickly from overwatering. So, repotting to larger pots too often is discouraged. They like snug pots. Chunky well draining soil containing orchid bark, perlite, coconut potting mixes and sometimes worm castings/charcoal are best. Peat moss and standard potting mixes hold water too long and should be avoided. 🍀🪴

Wayettii and Australis were the most forgiving for me early on. Compacta is a stinker- I still have it despite its best efforts!

Basic carnosa is a safe bet. Krimson princess or queen.

My wayettii is super forgiving! (This happens to be the variegated variety). I got it in March and it has quadrupled in size since then. I have it in front of a very bright south-east facing window. I second many of the tips that Sunny gave. My Hoyas are in slightly snug pots in chunky mixes. I don’t like to let the soil dry out completely before watering - it can stunt growth. Good luck!
