Origin

The Arrowhead Plant, or Syngonium podophyllum, is an aroid - relative to the Peace Lily - and goes by a number of different names, including Arrowhead Vine, American Evergreen and Goosefoot. The common name 'Arrowhead' (as well as 'Goosefoot') refer to the distinct shape of this plant's foliage.

They're native to the rainforests of Central and South America, where they can be found climbing vine-like along the trunks of trees. However, younger Arrowhead Plants tend towards a bushier, more shrubby appearance, and can be pruned to maintain this shape if you'd rather it doesn't trail. Alternatively, it can be a fun plant to display along trellises or other surfaces.

Care

Another common relative of the Arrowhead Plant is the Philodendron, and as such its care needs are quite similar.

In their native tropical environment, they're adapted to warm, high humidity conditions with dappled light that is filtered through the canopies of taller trees, so ideally you should try and replicate these conditions in your home. Too much sunlight can scorch the leaves, and too little humidity can lead to pest infestations such as spider mites.

Pinching off new growth every now and then can help to keep your Arrowhead Plant looking full and bushy - perfect if you want to display yours on a table or surface instead of as a climbing plant. Make sure to wear gloves when handling the plant, as it produces sap which can potentially cause irritation to the skin.

Other

Arrowhead Plants come in a number of different varieties that show beautiful colors and variegation patterning. Available colors include creamy-white, purple, silver and pink.

Their tolerance of low light conditions and space-saving climbing ability makes them a great choice for smaller homes / apartments, allowing you to create an appealing indoor jungle even if you're limited on spare room!

This plant naturally grows on trees so it will be super happy if you give it something to grow on.

It also helps to purify the air in your home!

However, you should be careful to keep yours out of reach of pets and children, as they are unfortunately toxic.
