Brand new to the succulent party.
Has anyone actually had luck growing succulents in rocks?? Probably a dumb question cause I’m sure rocks don’t have the nutrients plants usually need but everyone tells me succulents can thrive in very different environments. Just wanna know if I should move them to soil

You can definitely grow them and rocks, but there will need to be a small amount of soil to hold some moisture and provide nutrients for the roots. it definitely doesn’t need to be tightly packed, as succulents don’t mind air as much as as many other plants in their root ball. In fact, they prefer to dry out almost completely prior to being watered. if your planter has drain holes large enough to put your pinky into, I recommend checking moisture level through the bottom instead of the top.

Thanks so much! Do you have any suggestions as to what type of soil? Should I still use succulent soil for the drainage? Or something that holds on more since it will be mixed in with the rocks?

i’d make sure there’s at least some soil in there. air plants are really the only plant i know of that don’t need any medium, they can just chill in, well, the air. but i mean it could be a cool experiment!

you can use others but i believe porous rocks are the way to go for excellent root health. perlite is also called sponge rock, and pumice is a porous lava rock. both are common soil amendments, favored for their air pockets and ability to hold water, they’re also very lightweight, perlite more so. you can grow succulents in these alone or mix with a bit of moisture retentive media like potting soil, compost, or coco coir or husk chips and worm castings.
