# Any advice for how to help my succulent? I’ve owned it for years…

_Lagt ut av qwertyaprw den 2024-05-22_

Any advice for how to help my succulent? I’ve owned it for years (since before I knew how to take care of plants), and I recently removed the dead parts and repotted it. It seems to be getting worse, though. The bottom drainage hole is plugged up with some moss to prevent all the soil from falling out, so maybe it’s retaining too much water? It does still get drainage, but not as much as it probably should. It’s in a very warm and sunny windowsill 24/7, and the planter is made from 3D-printed resin.

Very cool planter! I’m thinking maybe it’s that moss “plug” retaining moisture. I would pull it out through the bottom and just place a drip tray under to protect the windowsill. You could also opt for a little plastic or metal mesh disk next time you repot if you don’t like the look of the drip tray!😄

oh that makes perfect sense, thank you! :)

Coffee filters work great to cover the bottom of your pots :) they break down over time, but they last long enough for the soil to get established so it doesn’t pour out the bottom when you water.

That is a great tip!

Hey you also might be overwatering your plant which can rot the roots since it has no drainage

Google says to:
Repot it with new soil and cover the top with fresh soil

And pro tip some plants are allergic to tap water and bottled water and it can brown the leaves like that rain water is the best way to go.

ohh thank you! i genuinely didn’t know that

I agree with the moss plug being part of the problem. A few more questions so we don’t miss anything. What soil is it in? And how do you determine when to water it?

Also how confident are you that it’s an echiveria? It’s hard to tell in its current state, but to me, it looks more like a haworthia or aloe.

What’s really confusing me is that it looks under watered. Yellow shriveled leaves. Green sunken leaves.

It’s in standard potting soil, which is likely part of the issue as well. I’ve heard succulents tend to prefer sandy/rocky soil to facilitate drainage. And as for when to water it, I use Planta’s advice.

You were right, my plant identification app says it’s a haworthia!
