First time owning a cactus so I don’t know much about them, but I don’t think it should be root bound like this. Given how root bound it is, I have a pot slightly bigger but I’m thinking maybe I need to go a size bigger?

I know some plants love to be root bound, I’m unsure of cacti, buuutttt it looks like there’s more roots than soil 🫣

Looks to me like it might need a good root pruning

How do you safely do that?

New pot time! Make sure to be gentle and leave it alone for a couple days after tho, I’ve found that it needs some time to adjust to the bigger pot

Don’t you think it’s important to loosen the roots that are choking it?

Of course, just be gentle

First untangle the wrapped around roots then carefully remove the soil from the roots by squeezing it and rolling it between your hands. Once you get the soil off trim about a third of the roots and any black or damaged ones. After that you should let it air out for a few days before repotting so the roots can callous over. I like using cinnamon powder sprinkled over the roots to help prevent bacteria from growing.
The picture is from when I had to do the same to a haworthia plant that was in a brick of peat and perlite when I got it last fall but waited until spring to repot
