# Hello! I bought this cactus months ago, and sadly watched the top…

_Posted by SuZQ on 2024-07-09_

Hello! I bought this cactus months ago, and sadly watched the top flower die. I kept it in the pot I bought it in. I was going to give it a proper burial once it looked like it was a complete loss. To my surprise (and great excitement) a tiny little arm started to grow. This pic is about 2 months since. Am I afraid to touch this? You bet! So I’m looking for advice from this group! Shes GOT to make it this time!
She’s currently on my front porch with bright but not direct sun. I’m in NJ- of course she’ll be spending the winters indoors☺️ Thanks for reading!

hard to say with complete certainty now that the top piece is gone BUT I’m pretty dang confident here. these are spliced for novelty.

the (formerly) bulbous part on top is a different plant — in this case probably a moon cactus — that is grafted onto the top of the base cactus — in this case it’s a dragonfruit cactus. I’d pull the dead guy off the top and let this do its thing 😊

betting it looked something like this when you got it?

Yea I agree, pull the dead part off and let it do its thing. But also, does your pot have drainage holes ? I can’t tell, but if it doesn’t, maybe consider repotting it to a pot with drainage because I killed a cactus before because of it. It’s a small but significant tip I think. Good luck !

Yes!

The pot does have drainage, so we’re ok there. But I question the soil- gets very hard when dried out. Maybe it needs a repot?

could be! if it stays really dry for too long it can become hydrophobic — but it would be easy enough to pop it out and check, and maybe go up a size
