# Does anyone know much about string of turtles? Tried my question on…

_Publicado por Snowstorm el 2024-04-23_

Does anyone know much about string of turtles? Tried my question on google but couldn’t find the answer.

Do these new leaves look ok? They’re quite dark and the old leaves that the turtles had from the nursery are plump but it’s new ones are more like pancakes. Is this normal? Will the plump up as they get bigger?

Forgive the noob questions I really want to keep these guys going, they’re my favourite. 😍

Guises I wasn’t asking the right questions. Thanks!

Cute!! I don’t have string of turtles, and I only this week got some string of hearts and string of pearls, so take my advice with a grain of salt.😄 But just based on other succulents, some of the very bottom leaves almost look overwatered like they want to burst. Kinda translucent. Maybe it’s just the lighting in the photo. 🤔 Do you have the ramekin there for decoration, catch drips, or is it sitting in water? I ask because that looks like how I have my bog plants set up and succulents need the opposite. I know you are asking about leaves, not water, but I just wanted to make sure the cute plant can live a long time.😊❤️ And if the leaves aren’t supposed to took like that, maybe that could be why?

Ok, I looked up string of turtles on planta as if I was getting one and it does look like the new leaves might just be dark like that. It also looks like the stems should be hanging down so I wonder if yours needs more light too since they look like they are reaching up for light.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that planta has a write up on this plant too. They don’t always so it always makes me happy when they do! Scroll way down on your plant’s info page and click this for more care information. Maybe that will help too.😊

Yes the grey pot is just decoration, it’s in a brown nursery pot with drainage that I take out to bottom water. I let it drip dry a bit before putting it back in there.

I thought maybe it was getting too much light and that’s why they were dark like that, since I read too much light makes them go dark, and also that the leaves retain the water so I figured that’s why they looked like they’re so plump.

I didn’t know plants had a write up. I’ll go check that out!! Thank you!!!

You’re welcome!😊

Yes, the leaves do store the plant’s water like other cactuses and succulents. So they don’t need to be watered to keep the dirt wet. They will suck up water into the leaves for storage and the dirt should dry out again. What I do for other succulents is check the leaves closest to the roots to see if they feel plump, or if they are getting softer. Not mushy, but wilted feeling. That’s when you know to water. Usually you let the soil dry out between waterings until that happens.

My string of hearts leaves are plump too. I was just referring to a few of yours closest to the dirt that almost look translucent.

Oh, and yes, sun can darken leaves. Too much sun can burn them. Too little can cause them to be too pale. In the middle, brings out the plant’s true colors, whatever that is supposed to be.😊 Maybe try planta’s light meter on their location to see if they are getting enough?

It doesn’t look low on water at all. The lower leaves would be deflated if it was. The plant will tell you when it needs water. 😊Think of the leaves as water balloons full of water. The roots absorb water, the lower leaves fill up, then pass it on to the next leaf, and so on. The plant uses water from the lower leaves first, then the next leaf up, etc. so the lower leaves being full and plump, even shiny, means it’s good on water. It has to use up that water before it can drink up more water from the dirt. The dirt drying out is just to keep the roots healthy. The plant still has water in its leaves to use before it needs to be watered again. The lower leaves should get wrinkly or more pliable before you need to water again. Some succulents are easier to tell than others. If the leaves don’t fold over easily when they are plump, then them being more pliable is a good sign to water. Again, we are looking at the lower older leaves, not the new leaves that are naturally softer. I hope that helps!😊

Ooooooh ok that is suuuuuper helpful thank you!!! I think I might be a tad over watering it if I’m waiting for it to dry out. I didn’t know to check the lowest leaves. I was supposed to water today but she’s not dried out yet so I skipped watering. The lowest leaves def aren’t wrinkly so I’ll wait a few more days.

I did see that they get darker as they age so maybe that’s just a sign she’s super happy. I’m so proud of all her new vines she’s producing and there are even some suuuuuuuper tiny turtles growing! 😍😍😍 ive moved her from the middle of the table away from the grow light to right at the window under the grow light so hopefully the more light will help her grow to their true colours.

Thanks so much for all your help!!!

I saw planta had this picture on the write up so maybe the darker coloring is just your plant coloring up more to its true colors? Either way, your plant is very pretty.😍 Baby succulents tent to be greener and then show their “true colors” as they get bigger and get enough light.

When turtles get blurry they need more sun! On the top of the plant.

#### Succulent❤️Mama respondió el 2024-04-24

That is such a good way of putting it. So blurry is the lighter ones that it came with from the store? I haven’t had this variety before, but it’s so cute!

#### Snowstorm respondió el 2024-04-24

Oooh ok, thank you!!! so assuming the blurry ones are the old leaves, then would. It be correct to assume my new turtles that are more dark in colour have been getting the correct amt of light?

Do you know why the new turtles aren’t as plump? Or will that come as they age?
