# I had my plant since February and now she is losing leaves like its…

_Lagt ut av Jan den 2024-05-23_

I had my plant since February and now she is losing leaves like its rotting and falling off. And the soil smells bad. The other leaf part looks ok.

What can I do to save her? Think I probably over fed my plant. When I downloaded this app I just learned how often to feed her.

It’s probably just being over watered. Succulents don’t need to be watered much at all. Some every other week and some even a month or more

You could always let it dry a bit and/or repot if you think there’s too much nutrient in the soil

Haworthia have fleshy roots that rot easily when overwatered. This \& whatever fungus has been growing from overfertilizing is probably what’s causing the smell.

Repot into gritty, rocky soil. Something that is at least 50% perlite or pumice. For the other ~50%, make sure it’s mostly fir/redwood bark \& not some other kind of organic material known for holding moisture (i.e. coco coir, peat moss, sphagnum etc.) Some people will even plant their Haworthia in 100% inorganic materials such as akadama

First of all, that soil looks really wet! Succulents need to sit in dry soil until their leaves show signs of needing water. It is quite possible your entire plant is rotting and is not savable; however, it’s possible it is savable. You probably need to dump that pot out as gently as you can right away. Take a picture and post it on here of what the roots and the rest of the plant currently looks like. If you comment underneath my comment, I will come back to reply and help you. 😊

In general, succulents need a well draining soil, drainage holes, and decent lighting to stay healthy. But right now let’s just focus on if this plant can be saved. Fingers crossed!❤️

A succulent in regular potting soil with no drainage holes will always rot. There are a variety of soils that work for different people, depending on their environment, whether the plant is indoor or outdoor, and how often they water. I often use miracle grow tropical, citrus, and cactus soil. But I know that one does not work for a lot of people. I also have a bag of pearlite to add in sometimes. Sometimes I mix in small rocks or wood chips. The goal is to have a soil that is well draining and will dry out within a day wherever you have that plant placed. I have recently started trying out academe and that may very well work in an area that has low airflow and high humidity. It would require more often watering, but it wouldn’t stay waterlogged like a regular soil. In most cases, some form of cactus or succulent soil will work great.

Drainage holes are super important. You can have the plant directly in a pretty pot that has drainage holes, or you can have it in an inner pot with drainage holes that sits in a pretty pot with no drainage holes. You always water until the water runs out the bottom to ensure that all the dirt got wet. You can even repeat that a couple times in the row within a few minutes to ensure that all the dirt got wet. Let the pot continue dripping the remaining excess water out until it mostly stops. Then you can place it back in the outer pot or back on the shelf where you had it. Succulents also need to be in a pot that their roots can reach the bottom of, so they can suck up all the water. If there is water that the roots can’t reach, they can develop root rot from staying wet all the time.

Succulents need to sit in dry dirt from about a day after watering until they show signs of needing water again. If they’re sitting in moist or wet dirt for days at a time, that will rot the roots.
