# What’s going on with my ghost plant here? It lost a lot of leaves…

_Pubblicato da ObsessedLeafLover🌿✨ il 2026-10-06_

What’s going on with my ghost plant here? It lost a lot of leaves where all the roots started growing from. Should I behead it and put those roots in the dirt or should I just leave it?

My experience with similar succulents is the leaves nearest the soil are the oldest leaves so they'll eventually die and drop off. Cutting it back should cause it to branch. Once those get long enough you cut them back and they'll branch. The pieces you cut can be rooted in soil and eventually added to the pot to make a "bushier" plant.

Ghost plants which are a graptopetalum naturally lose bottom leaves. Lack of sun will increase the legginess. You can propagate the ends. They root quickly. This is a Grapteveria. Similar plant with similar growth habit. I don’t like the legginess so I crop and prop every couple years. Water the plant a couple days before. Cut off the good stems. Leave a little stem to anchor into soil. Allow to callous over a day or two. Repot into good quality succulent soil. After about a week. Squirt some water around stem into the soil. Do not water the whole planter. In a couple weeks it should be pretty well rooted. If it becomes dehydrated looking add a little water.

If you leave the stem in the original soil, cut it back to a couple inches, and it may grow new rosettes where the leaves were previously. I’ve done that before also. A rooting hormone spray helps.
