# I had read you could propagate leaves on soil and they’ll grow roots…

_Publicado por Kirsten el 2024-06-04_

I had read you could propagate leaves on soil and they’ll grow roots to form a new plant. I put some fallen leaves on the soil of my jade plant to grow, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

I know jade is a type of succulent so not to water too much, but do the leaves need frequent misting/watering to propagate and grow roots? Should I grow them separately?

Nah just give them time, they’ll do it. Water as usual. I find jade to be a thirstier than usual succulent, especially the larger they get.

It will use the moisture in the leaf to produce roots. The leaves themselves will begin to flatten and shrivel as they dry and the new babies form. youre going to crowd this pot though if they all take off and I would give this more sun. As much as you can

Oh no I had a few shrivel up and I thought they were dead so I threw them out 🙈 I have a grow light would that help? Otherwise I don’t think I have a spot in my apartment this plant could stay to get more light

It needs full sun so I would get it under a grow light if you have it

Jade plants thrive a lot better in a colder environment, whether that is in a basement (with windows) or a place where it is just naturally cold. Hope this helps!!

Mine was a tiny cutting a few years back. Now it just grows and grows. I rarely watered it the entire first couple years. Good luck to you!

Jade plants grow as shrubs in warm sunny places, so I’m not sure about thriving in cold? They do well overwinter, I definitely wouldn’t call them sensitive to cold, but they’re very tolerant. I grew this one from a top cutting of my mother plant. They’re prolific!

I currently have 3 cuttings off my 30 year old jade from a few weeks ago and I’ve found 1. I’ve had a lot more luck with stem propagations than leaf props with jades, and 2. If you can stick where you have your props in the brightest windowsill, that’s definitely helped with mine. For your stems, I suggest pouring a little water in the holes you’ve formed from where you’ve stuck the stems into the soil, then sticking the stems back in. It took about 2 weeks for mine to start forming little roots after found that and checking in on it to see if any roots have formed or if the soil under where I stuck the stem is dry enough to add a little water to. You DO NOT need to wet the thing completely or mist it that often. It could take a few weeks, but patience and a bright windowsill or grow light tend to be the best little helper for jades. Hope this helps!
