# Does anyone know what this white fluffy stuff is on my echevaria’s…

Does anyone know what this white fluffy stuff is on my echevaria’s roots? I went to water it today as per planta and the soil is all dried up so he could use a good soak. I bottom water only so perhaps it’s from that? The roots don’t smell like anything so I don’t think it’s root rot and they’re not mushy. Could it be a mould?? He lives in a bright window and is otherwise very happily popping out new leaves and even got his red tips back.

Dr planta again says overwatered but I only water as per its schedule (last watered on the 12th) and always lift him outta his nursery pot to check the soil wetness first. (Nursery pot has drainage, decorative pot doesn’t but he get drip dried before going back in the decorative one)

It’s either micro roots or fungus. Check for attachment points to the main roots to see if they are truly roots. It may be fungus if it can be easily removed because it’s not attached.

The fluff seems attached to the ‘main’ root around each fluff piece. I blew on it a bit and it didn’t seem to come off at all.

Then, those are roots. The plant looks healthy. No need to disturb it. 🍀🪴

Thanks for the confirmation! He’s my only succulent, and I’m still fairly new to plant parenthood. I water him today and the fluff was way less today. (Shoulda gotten a pic. Darn!)

Those are root hairs not mold! Natural part of the root, it allows a increase of surface area in order to absorb nutrients that could be in the soil. Very happy plant! ☺️

Oh interesting! I didn’t know this! Thank you!!! I’ll be sure to keep this in mind if I ever see it again. I was worried it was mould bc it’s at the bottom and maybe I didn’t drain it as well as I thought I did, and he’s in such a bright window maybe it got humid in there.
